Hmmm, you know what, I've never tried it. But I can't see why you can't as long as it's a credit card and not a debit card.

I'll have a look at a machine tomorrow morning...

EDIT : A coupld of French sites say that you can , no problem, but it's €150 per bike you rent out (the amount they preauthorize), best not use a debit card.

you've been mis-informed! it's one euro to sign up for one day, then you can take out a bike, and ride it for 30 mins free, then any half an hour after that you gotta pay a euro, and then if you don't return it after 20 hours you're charged 150 ! :)

err, I haven't been misinformed. I use the Velib almost every week. :)

"preauthorize" doesn't mean that they take the money from your card, just that you give them permission to (as you said, should you not return the bike). If you rent out 2 bikes then it's €150 per bike.

If you drop the bike back within the 30 minutes and can just get another one straight away for another free 30 minutes.

    right.........sorry ! :( so i misunderstood you ! :)

But it's just cause I'm going there with my friend this year and our plan is to rent out two velibs and take pictures of us on them and use them for our french oral ! plus it would be cool to cycle around paris :) and she doesn't have a credit or debit card sooo

It was me that didn't explain myself properly :)

When you rent out the bike you'll get a receipt with a 6 digit number on it. Combining this with a PIN number you choose when renting for the first time you can continue to get new bikes all day (or all week if you chose the 7-day option).

My wife has it added to her travelcard we use for the metro/busses so she just walks up to a bike and takes one without havig to go to the central machine and messing about with cards.

    Hi
Anyone ever have trouble getting their deposit back?
Can't find a contact for Velib on the net anywhere.
Does anyone have a number or email?

Did you use a credit card?

They don't actually take the deposit from your account unless you don't take the bike back. If you used a debit card then they probably did take the deposit which is refunded when you take the bike back but may take 3 days to be processed.
