    160ish left

Yeah I was thinking that and judging from previous years the
drop out/completion rate has been about 50% .

Estimate of 70 amended to a slightly higher 80.:)

Feels like a lot less to be honest. For some reason it seems like there a fair few less than there was when we started.
The number attending lectures is probably also a much smaller percentage of the people in the course. Those people will more than likely be joining Patricide soon. :o

Does anyone else find it very easy to skip Fridays? Just cos theres only maths and a tutorial. Especially when you go out on the Thursday night and not in the mood for commuting there :p

    Extremely easy to skip them..

    :D

I'm class rep. No intention of leaving the course.. But the lectures are presently quite simple thus I don't go to all of them. ^_^

Ha, I attended my first maths tutorial there this past week, although yer man didn't really seem to be sure about some of the stuff.

Lectures are ok so far besides Computer Systems Hardware, I found the boolean algebra stuff hard to comprehend, plus its really boring so I fell asleep...

Yup, I've left too! Pretty crappy course has to be said, cool people, cool campus but the course is just bleh. Probably only for certain people.

? Course is decent. Perhaps rather than just being for 'certain people' whatever that means, it's just not for you.

I didn't mean that offensively or anything. When I said that it was for certain people that was implying that it wasn't for me, i.e certain people that are not me :p It was a crap course though in my opinion (note, my opinion), the fact that this course in particular was referenced on the national evening news about not just needing more students to apply but to stay and make it through the whole course and the horrendous high level of drop outs of not just this year, but what appears to be every other year shows that something is up and needs to be looked at. I remember from when I was there people had difficulty with Systems Hardware in particular and many lectures were also cancelled. Many simply didn't understand that and wanted tutorials or something on it, and as far as I know, that is something that still hasn't been looked at.

i think to opine about the quality of any college course after 3 months is a bit rich anyway. First year is not a particularly difficult year if you put any work into it.

and arn't you the guy who said how easy it is to skip fridays in college?

Are you planning on paying your fees? If you're not then there's not much hope of your results even counting for anything.
    PENALTIES

Fines will be imposed if fees are not paid by the due dates. A late payment fine of €170 will be imposed in respect of each instalment unless prior arrangements have been made in writing with the Finance Office. If the instalment due, together with the late payment fine of €170 has still not been paid one month after the due date, an additional fine of €35 per week will be imposed until the fees outstanding have been paid. In addition, if fees (including late payment fines) have not been paid in full by 9th January 2009, all University facilities will be withdrawn, and the student will be prohibited from sitting examinations. If fees (including late payment fines) have not been paid in full by 13th February 2009, the student may be deregistered.

    Taken from here.

Hows it a bit "rich"? Anyone can have an opinion on anything once they experience it can they not? Is it not a bit rich of you to say that I basically can't have an opinion just because I didn't enjoy the course and left? Its not like I just looked at the course and just said it was crap, I went in and experienced it and formed my opinion, honestly I can't see how you can fault me for that but whatever.

And I am indeed the very man that said that about Fridays, but I think you'd find I wasn't alone and I'm sure others who said it are still in the course and enjoying it. Fact is, there was 1 lecture on a Friday, for those like myself that live away and takes an hour and a half to two hours to get into the college by bus and commutted in everyday sometimes due to certain factors like work in the evening or whatever it didn't seem worth it. 4 hours travelling for 1 hour? I think you're picking at straws here really, loads of people would feel the same way as I did concerning fridays and attendence.

Computer Systems hardware was difficult but the rest of the course wasn't that difficult for the most part, at least nothing that was impossible. It was all just very mundane and boring for my preference. Any course is achieveable if you put in the effort but why bother if you don't like the course at all? At the end of the day thats what its all about, your future and doing something you enjoy, if you're willing to work and save for the fees (which for me is worth it in the end if it means me doing something that appeals to me far more) then why not?

i'm not saying your not entitled to your opinion guy, i'm saying that your opinion is based on a 2/3 months of a 4 year course. You basically experienced 6 modules out of the 40 or so on the curriculum.

And I am indeed the very man that said that about Fridays, but I think you'd find I wasn't alone and I'm sure others who said it are still in the course and enjoying it. As you well know, in college you make your own timetable. If you dont want to hit DCU on a friday then that's your prerogative - but you boasting about "How easy it is to skip fridays" to other students is a bit cheeky when you drop out the next month...

Fair enough, if you dont like the course then its not for you and you made the right decision for yourself and I hope it all works out for you. But calling a course "Pretty crappy" after dropping out of it before the ink has even dried on your student card is a biased and unfair opinion that future students thinking about doing CA should discard.

If you like the course and find it interesting then all well and good, like anything what you get out of it depends on what you're prepared to put in.

If in the first year of the course you're struggling and find that even though you've worked hard you haven't done well enough then I suggest you consider another course. It does not get any easier. Most people should, with a little effort and a continuing commitment to the course have no issues with the assignments or exams, but they do get progressively harder year on year. The first year is an introduction designed to ease less familiar students into the programming mindset. If you have any previous programming experience or are just good at thinking things through logically, you'll likely find it a cake walk.

The course is also changing: 10-15 years ago students had to deal with much larger class sizes (about 300 freshers each year, they couldn't find rooms big enough for all of them) and an increased workload from the high number of lectures, labs and tutorials they would have had to attend - Basically 9 to 5, 5 days a week. You can consider yourself lucky you don't have to deal with that anymore (I know I do). The downside of this is that you're expected to learn and do things by yourself, the lecturers will give pointers in the direction of the information you need, but to get the practical experience (which you WILL need) you'll have to go and figure it out on your own. By the time you hit final year you'll be down to about 10 hours of lectures a week, less in semester two, so you might only need to be in college 3 days a week.

Now quit bitching and get back to work.
