A new SI for Muntjac has been issued. It puts Muntjac on the open seasons order and gives them an open season all year round to the best of my knowledge. I haven't been able to read it yet due to email problems at work. NPWS would like to see any animals shot so please contact your local Ranger, which will most likely be me as it seems most likely they will be shot in Wicklow. We won't be taking the animal from you if you shoot it, just want a few small details and to keep record of whats shot.

Why hasnt there been something about the wild boar aswell as the muntjac? do the NPWS see muntjac more damaging than boar?i know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy that supposedly left a few go wild in wexford, dunno how credible it is though, i would love to see a few boar back in ireland, they do make a hell of a mess of gardens though..

prob know that guy .like i sed before there is more wild boar in ireland that muntjac ,there is a guy not too far from ya tiny selling boar .if that muntjac had have been shot in cork there would be noting about it . if more effort was put into the deer we have .ya would have a better chance of winning the lotto than shooting a munty

But whereabouts???If they are considerd a pest species, wouldnt it be better to get rid of them before they become established??Imean I think folks would know if boar had been in their gardens or crops, cos it would look like....well a heard of wild boar went thu it.But it is either being kept quiet alot ,or there isnt that many doing recogniseable damage??

I'm sure you could pass it off as one to some people, I wouldn't let it run with the terriers on a fox drive all the same. I know of a few border terriers having some close shaves in the past, that lad would be a goner:)

The wildlife act does not protect wild boar.

what does that mean exactly? they can be hunted like vermin?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 270 ✭✭John Griffin

Yes, they are an unprotected species and can be hunted just like feral goats, foxes and rabbits. You can shoot them all year round and there are no restrictions to controlling them under the wildlife act. You still must do so humanely though, otherwise you may be prosecuted for animal cruelty. Most deer hunting calibers around the 6.5 or .25-06 equivalent and upwards are suitable.

I think New Zealand style would be entering your head, pack of hounds and a buck knife and off out Pig Sticking with ya!!:). I'd say a judge would take a dim view of it in this country, so best stay clear of that kind of thing.:)

Or a good wallop of 12ga. 00 buckshot from short distance. A flank shot with an eventual quick follow up would be ideal with that. You wouldn't have the penetrating power for head on or shoulder shots.

If you know of a gang of them in your area and you want to hunt them some of the best ways is lying in wait with a powerfull enough gun at known feeding spots at first light or in the evening. Of course you could lamp them as well but I wouldn't as I consider them game and not vermin.

Another way is a driven shoot with sturdy terriers with a couple of handlers hunting dense cover and try to break them into a line of guns, again rifles or the very high power end of shotgun ammo. Slugs would be ideal but anyway the powers that be etc etc...

As a couple of lads said you'd know if they were around...they're just as efficient as a small tractor and plough outfit when it comes to turning over a field.

there was a good article in countrymans recently, lad went pig hunting in new zealand, sounds exciting. they use bulldog x's to find and hold the pig then the hunter slits its throat. not sure my hounds would take one,be a nice chase or flush to guns.

I know a ranger in New Zealand and he does it, he's a fanatic, he gave me the monthly magazine they have devoted entirely to Pig sticking. Mental stuff, pretty physical stuff. It was done in europe for Wildboar in the past, but i think it is illegal in most of europe now. They used a spear to finish, the boys down under get a little more personal with a buck knife.
