    Just seen this

    http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=486134

Not for everyone but that's my kinda bug. There's a number for him on his ad on volkszone but I need a big clatter of questions to ask the fecker cos I'm really interested and it looks priced to sell so I think I'd have to be quick. I don't fancy his me me me tone on the ad and £250 is a fine big reward if he's being optimistic.

    What do you think???

I wouldn't read too much into the attitude. I just read it as confident sales pitch.
As regards the non returnable £250.00, I think if it were me, I would request a similar amount. There are a lot of dreamers on ebay and I believe the time wasters can be very frustrating.

As regards the car, I don't have any direct experience with VW's but I have owned or been involved in old cars for nearly 25 years and that Beetle seems good value at the buy it now price.
    Perhaps he'd accept an offer?

I would expect to have to deal with some rust issues and I wouldn't be surprised if it swallows up another €1000.00/€1500.00 to get it right.
From my un (beetle) educated eye it looks really nice I realise it's not original and that won't appeal to the purist's but I like the lowered look and the wheels and clear lenses really suit it, especially in silver.

Anyway, just my opinion, but I think it's worth a punt.
    Mark.

I saw this bug over at the VolksWorld show in April this year. It was for sale there. Not being in the market to buy on the day, I didn't look too closely but superficially it looks like a nice car. The colour, wheels, stance all look nice on it, the 1303 model responds really well to big wheels and a lowering job.

The thing is though, and I would feel the same way about buying any car on ebay is that you can't crawl under it and have a good root around it looking for possible flaws. Another thing that would concern me is that it was for sale an aircooled VW specialist show, full of VW aircooled enthusiasts who knew what they were looking at and it didn't sell over the weekend there. I can't remember the asking price on the day so maybe it was a bit steep (often prices get bumped up for the show  ) but if the price was reasonable on the day, was there something else turning people off?

I'd ask for more pics, of the underside, inner wheel arches, spare wheel well, heater channels, frame head, floors. RUST is the one thing you don't want. You can inspect and buy a solid beetle locally and put the wheels on & lower it yourself.

Ever try Googling peoples mobile number?? This guy is some kind of speculator for sure. Maybe that means he bought it then?

Fair play for taking a few snaps on the day- it was obviously a looker.

fair point, it may well have sold and he's shifting it on...

are you going to take a punt on it?

...are you going to take a punt on it?

As I've said- it's definitely the kind of thing I like. It wasn't really a chance encounter- I've been really running the fantasy again for a few months. I've been into bugs (and lots of others) for years but, being all thumbs mechanically, I've been very reluctant to take the plunge.

I'm getting sick of talking myself out of it, though.

if you look at it another way, if you bought it and it turned out to be a bit of a project, would you be willing to part it out or sell it on at a loss to get rid of it? Or would you launch into a fixer-upper project?

Do you know anyone in the UK who'll go and assess the car for you? It does look like a lovely car and it would be to my taste too (maybe not the ragtop on that model and I'd want an updated interior but I could live with it) and if the worst came to the worst, you could part it out or sell it on and make most of your money back.

I suppose therein lies the risk of buying ANY car from ebay. Conversely, it could turn out to be veeeery nice and you'll have a clean, stylish, solid bug for not much money. And they're not depreciating like a Ford Fiesta you could buy for the same price...

    your money, your choice ;)

Sorry, slightly off topic but what's the VolksWorld show and where and when does it be?

www.volksworld.com, it's a static VW aircooled show run by VolksWorld magazine, happens in Sandown Park racecourse, Esher, Surrey over 2 days about the end of march/start of april.

Great show to go to, book your flights early and it's a cheap weekend. Most years a bunch of us head over for the weekend, fly out on Saturday morning, fly back Sunday night. Keep an eye on www.southernvolksfolks.com, www.type2ireland.org and www.eirecooled.com towards the end of the year for the organisation details.

    my pics from this year...

and the carpark is almost as good of a show as the bit you pay to get into ;D
