It would be good to have them stay in country, but chances are they end up cross water.

I like the Bettle, My missus has a fondness for them. But I've just bought a '78 Land Rover so no more room

    Anyhoo,

    Rob

Does 3 grand seem a fair price for that beetle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I don't like the way he says it's been sitting for awhile + the blisters he mentions. Could well be in a bad state. The only way to find out with something like that is to look at it as you know yourself. Pictures are only they to show it's a beetle and the colour. Everything else can be made look mint.

Would anyone here actually buy a car on e-bay? What's the procedure? Would you not want to see the car in 'real life' and have a test drive etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Went to see that beetle last night, its actually not too bad, needs a drivers side front 'pan though, and a few other bits and pieces.I wouldnt buy a car off Ebay without looking at it,unless it was a parts car or something like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭gfwd

It's good to see an Irish Dolly for a change (mine is an import). Something's not right about it though. It couldn't be a 1500HL, even though it looks exactly like one. It would have been about '76 before the HL came out. In '72 you could get either an early 1850 or a front wheel drive 1500.

    I'll get me coat...:p

Ended up buying the bug during the week,it was a little overpriced IMO,but its a genuine 1977 kerry car so i couldnt let it go,even had the original back plate in the boot:)Needs some suspension work(shocks, ball joints etc) and a bit of welding here and there alright, but nothing unmanageable.I have a spare 'pan to get parts from so that helps.Project for the winter....and probably next winter:P

Yep and I have done so. If the car is not exactly as advertised they you have the right to walk away.

Well done fella ;) It looks straight enough - nice to see what is left of original Irish cars being saved

Thanks atlantean, thats the main reason i bought it,apart from the fact its a beetle which i always said i would buy some day,its a genuine local kerry reg one too.Never thought id find one!!
It does need some work, but im looking forward to doing it,it drives really well!!
I now understand why so many guys bought beetle after beetle back in the day, theres nothing quite like it on the road!!
For a 1200 engine(its the original) it has a surprising amount of life in it,and its very comfortable for its era.
Also the build quality is very good compared to my cherry:p.

Just wondering is this an original Irish car?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1970-MGB-ROADSTER_W0QQitemZ190277640342QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item190277640342&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A7%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
Reg looks like it, also the owner said it was made for export, although car going from England were never designated as for Export and were counted in the domestic market as RHD, MPH etc etc laws the same. Confusing?

    This one as-well http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1973-MGB-ROADSTER-RED_W0QQitemZ280298315934QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item280298315934&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A7%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

I could be wrong, but from my understand all Irish regs had either a I or Z in them so differentiate them from mainland cars?

    A nice Irish escort http://cgi.ebay.ie/RS-2000-REPLICA-FORD-A-COLLECTORS-ITEM_W0QQitemZ280299534169QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item280299534169&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

they are all Northern Ireland registered,,,the first one was probably first registered in Jersey or suchlike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Since this has popped up again, heres an update on the beetle..
There was a little bit of rust in the pan...:p
    Image849.jpg
    Fred flintstone would be proud!
    Image855.jpg
And the heater channels were not exactly doing what they should be...
    Image863.jpg
So it was time to start stripping..
    Image852.jpg
So im kind of at this stage now..
    Image894.jpg
    Image905.jpg
Im waiting on new pan halves and a few more bits and pieces, and then ill attack it a bit more..
Incidentally, did anyone see Oliver Donovans 1967 bug in this months volksworld, now thats a restoration.

It will be ok,iv got some stick on this already on another forum. Its the only rust really on the car, both heater channels, im doing them one at a time and iv taken measurements.Theres nowhere for the body to move,as its supported front and back.If it was any more rusted i would have built a frame to tie everything together.
What year is yours? And is she in bad shape?

it's not the pan it's the luggage floor by the firewall that's gone totally.
this is what it looked like before

    and this is after.
    11udljd.jpg

it's only gonna be bolted and sealed for now as it's pretty rotten back there.
