Business casual - dresses and skirts

Im soon moving to a new job after 5 years in the same place. While I often wear skirts and dresses when I am going out, I have never worn either to work. I do get complimented on my clothes sometimes but I am always in trousers!. I usually shop in penneys, new look, boohoo.com, h & m etc.
As I am starting a new job I want to mix up my wardrobe a bit so I was hoping you guys could help me.:P What length and type of skirts and dresses are acceptable as business casual? Is an above the knee skirt okay if worn with dark tights? where should I look? Im a size 8, short but a bit pear shaped so pencil skirts just dont work on me!

    any advice appreciated!

I often wear skirts or dresses that either sit on my knee or around an inch above it, I wouldn't go much shorter for work. I usually wear plain dark tights and shoes or patterned tights with boots. I got a few wrap around dresses in New Look that I got loads of wear out of and I've got skirts there too, River Island can have nice skirts from time to time aswell.

    Hi Sugar drunk,
I agree with above poster re: skirt lenght. If you'd like to appear taller you can always go for a plain shift type/pinafore dress with a contrasting shirt underneath or match the skirt & shirt colours. The unbroken line of colour will make you appear taller and you can always brighten up the outfit with accessories.

Thats a great idea thanks guys. Am heading shopping in a week or two so will keep a look out. Re tights - are they essential? I hate them but wasnt sure what normal work norms are!

I only wear tights in the winter and even then I'll sometimes just wear boots and socks (hidden of course - not Gok style :p) if there's not too much leg on show.

Tight's aren't essential but a lot of women in the workplace will wear black tights with a skirt, especially in the winter. A very low denier could work, black woolie ones are really only for school imho. :pac:
Black tights can be good if you're worried the skirt is too short- you don't want a Bridget Jones 'you seem to have forgotten your skirt' comment too soon into a new job. :p
