Registration fees or 'Student Service Fees' (or some varient on this) - yes. You don't have to pay this as it would be paid for you. Some colleges have levies which each student has to pay though, although it's worth querying whether you could be exempt from these with the college themselves.

For example, UCD have a student centre levy. Trinity has a sports centre levy and a USI levy.

My course at an iT is starting on Monday and i haven't received word back yet from the VEC about my grant, what should i tell the college when they ask me for the reg fee?

Say you're applying for a grant. It's pointless to pay for the reg fee and to get it back, since it totally negates the whole point of getting it paid in the first place! So contact the Council/VEC early Monday morning for directions.

Hi myth (and others)im deferring payment of postgrad fees til i get the grant application processed, but will i have to pay the student levy now or can it be defered as well?

If by student levy you mean registration fee yes, if you're waiting to hear back about your grant you shoudn't pay. Contact your college and inform them that you're waiting for your grant, and if they kick up a fuss (since they just want the money) contact your Council/VEC to see if they'll be able to tell you over the phone what the story is/advise you what to do with the college.

As for levies, I mentioned them in post #2.

I know about the fees but theres a levy that usually comes out of the students wallet, for services or some such.

Registration fee pays for Student Services, Examinations and Registration usually. Any additional levies are decided by the students themselves in years gone by.

Without knowing more about the type of levy I can't really comment more, and since it's college specific it's probably best just to ring up the fees/grants/student services office on Monday to enquire further.

Last thing I forgot to mention, if you are getting a grant some colleges do allow students to be exempt from the paying of the levies. I know in Trinity for the Sports Club levy it was decided that students who are receiving grants would be exempt from the payment of that levy.
