  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭S.I.R

i'd be up for, a very close mates after up a s/c mk1 micra so we have to bring her alone and show her off.

will have the camera and maybe a ketel ??

also weekends are best for me but its majority rule....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Okay so after a few PM's and calls it was suggested that we meet either Sunday 21st or Sunday 28th, depending on the majority.

The plan has changed as it was loosely suggested that we meet somewhere like Santry, take a trip either through the tunnel and/or out along the coast road at Clontarf and up to the Deerpark in Howth for a cuppa/soup/brekkie, regroup, have a chat, look at the cars and then head next door into the transport museum for a look at the goods on display. We have been on to the transport museum and they can accomodate a small group.

This should be a fun event, some driving, some chatting etc.....and will be very informal but we would need to indicate how many are coming, both for the Deerpark and the museum.

Anyone interested please reply and state what date suits best. Ta !

Lol i'll have to get the father to throw me on the insurance of the Tr4a lol!

We had our motors meet in Roscrea, in a hotel on the Dublin side(who's name escapes me). Nice hotel, nice spot for parking and more so central of the country for most of the country. I might head up to this for a gander anyway, just see the numbers etc.

21st sounds better for me. I'm in Berlin the following weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

    Anyone else ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 523 ✭✭✭Lauder

21st seems fine to me. In Clontarf sounds grand, could meet in one of the carparks along the Coast Road, enough space for plenty cars and visible too. Il bring the MGB along anyways.

Bit far from kerry for me..

I'd say meeting somewhere in the midlands would be more ideal, somewhere that's roughly equal traveling distance for everyone.

By the way, could people with not-so-classic cars come along!? :P

............well theres nothing stopping anyone from organising a second meet elsewhere, but this is really just to kick it off again for anyone who is around and interested.

I dont think anyone would mind what vehicles arrive, its just a group of like minded enthusiasts after all !

Think we'll arrange to meet at The Coachmans and take it from there !

The 69 Regal hasn't been on the road since 1992. It was my 3rd car (after a Citroen Dyane 6 and a Wolseley 16/60). It's an restoration project that keeps starting and stopping. Besides, it's in Carlisle as is the Rialto which needs a head gasket, but is driveable (although just out of MOT and insurance). Wouldn't want to import the Rialto as I don't think it would receive favourable VRT quote. If it was classed as a motorcycle then it would be cheap enough, but as a car it would be expensive.

My worry with 3 wheelers (although touch wood I've never had a problem in the UK, but many have) is being tipped over by muppets.

I have been offered another DAF that isn't working, but would make a good starting point. But really I need something that doesn't need too much spannering.

I'll make an announcement later in the week...

Speaking of reliants, the old man had a regal supervanIII years back, when the mother ws learning to drive she turned it on its side:).
Not many reliants in this country, there was a club in england that a friend of the parents was a secretary of,they havnt been members for a good few years now though.
The rialto is a popular banger racer in england these days sadly.

Yeah just to confirm there are about 10 cars so far meeting in the carpark at The Coachmans on Sunday morning 10.30, driving out through Clontarf to the Marine hotel for a coffee/brekfast break and then up to the transport museum in Howth.

Should be a good group !

    Exit M1 for Airport.
Turn right at roundabout for Swords.
    Coachmans on right.
    I hope to be there.
What time does the museem open on Sundays?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Normally the museum opens at 2.00 but they are opening 1 hour earlier for us on this occasion.

Looks like a good group are now attending, it has been posted on one or two other sites. Lets hope for a good day weatherwise !

    Just a brief update ;

Due to the traffic for the match at Croke Park on Sunday we will now take an alternative route.

We will meet at the Coachmans as usual circa 10.30 for departure at 11.00 sharp, travelling north on the OLD N1/R127 through the series of roundabouts taking the third exit at the Seatown roundabout and onto the estuary road, into Malahide village and out through Portmarnock, Baldoyle and then Sutton, hugging the coast along the way.

We may need to regroup along the way, due to traffic lights splitting the group, and will stop either at Low Rock (Robswall) or Portmarnock or both as the needs arise. Dont woprry if you are not familiar with these places as we will organise it more clearly on the morning before we depart.

The repsonse has been very good so it should be very enjoyable !

I'm gonna come along. Car still needs a lot of work but no harm in giving it a run out

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 446 ✭✭Eric318

Ah great, I live on the Coast Road, so I can join in as you all pass by. The new car park by the football club just after Robswall is perfect.

Didn't bring my camera myself but a few lads took a lot of pics and hope to see some up later

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,957 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

Well not including my own, there were 34 cars that I took pictures of at the Coachmans in the morning. Along the way a few left and a few more joined.

Lovely day for a wee drive. Here's a link to my set:

    Great pictures Macplaxton :)

Today was my first time taking part in anything like this. Must say I really enjoyed myself

Yes it was a great day out, much better than expected. Great to meet a lot of you guys from Boards and see some old faces too.

The machinery there was stunning to say the least and it wasan enjoyable meeting, followed by a nice sedate and scenic drive around the coast. We all stopped at the White Sands hotel in Portmarnock for coffee/tea/mineral and basked in the sun ( thank you God). Then it was up to the transport museum in Howth.

Michael Corcoran in the museum made us feel very welcome and was a very knowledgeable person. We were allowed look around at everything, and for the few who stayed 'till the very end he went down the back and opened up some of the other sheds where they were doing the restoration work.

    It was fascinating !

Thanks go to all who helped organise this and arrange things in the background, spreading the word etc., you know who you are, and thanks to all who showed up !

It will be hard to better that run......................but I look forward to trying !!

Thanks for the pictures macplaxton, I too forgot my camera !

Great selection of cars turned up.Its great to get to talk to the owners rather then a static show where the cars are locked and parked up. A good collection of photos macplaxton. Thanks all

From another forum.....hope thats ok. Some great photos of the event. I have some good photos I took myself that I will try to put up tonight. The best meet up by far. Relaxed, great mix of cars and owners. Good route and very well organised.

We should do this again...who knows how many cars we could get out after this.

Shall we do it again? How about a Dublin "Ace Café" ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,822 ✭✭✭✭galwaytt

How about a 'not in Dublin' one ?

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I'd be up for that, in fact that was one of the original ideas we had, making it casual, a specific day of each month for folk to come along or not as they please.

I never really figured a suitable venue though. Maybe the Coachmans or Sands would be ideal since they serve tea & coffee prior to the lunch crowd, though they are not really "cool" venues.

A cafe with an owner who is also an enthusiast would be great !
How about a 'not in Dublin' one ?

..........nothing stopping that from happening either. Multiple venues would be great, folk could take their pick, with perhaps a twice monthly central meeting.
I'd be up for that !

Perhaps if we state roughly our location in a new thread someone could start a poll to see what/where the interest is ?

I say the Coachman, nearer to the Motorway and cheaper than the Sands (€2.90 for a small coke!!! Call me cheap if you must, this is more than at the Carlton in Cannes on the French Riviera).

I walked to the spar about 2 mins from Sands :D
