Alternatives to extension?

I'm currently thinking of creating some extra space in a three-bedroom house,
and I'm looking for a cheapest way to do this, preferably without a planning permission.

    Here are the options:
1.) Attic conversion - feasible but may be over budget.

    another way:

    2.) 966_house_extension.gif

Would an extension highlighted in bold be called a "pod"? It should be prefabricated and have a room for external access.

    Here are some issues:
Would it be possible to set up heat pipes and electrical services such as sockets in that "pod"?

Finally, would it be possible to set one up in Ireland at all? Would I need a planning permission for this?

A pod means alot of things, generally, its a prefab room, such as a bathroom or kitchen. Might also apply to a separate appartment or room "dropped" on top of a building.
I don't see how it applies in your case. but the name is beside the point.

Maybe i'm missing something, but what exactly makes your above proposal different than an extension? To me, its an extension, I see nothing to suggest otherwise. I may be missing something obviously
Planning permission is dependant on area, generally.

    I'm lost too.

If the OP needs additional space then the "alternative to extension" (thread title) is an attic conversion. Anything else is an extension.

Sorry that I haven't made it clear to you before -

I need an additional space, so what is the minimum area of a building that would require a planning permission?

I'm either looking for a prefab room or an attic conversion, and would like to find out which is the cheapest option, when it comes to setting it up and building it.

I also want to avoid going through application through planning permission.

    Thanks for your help.
