I have a bit of a problem. I'm looking at old, second hand Marshall heads. They look like the 1959slp but theyre alot older and im not sure what model they are. I'd also like to know what sort of price these are worth. They look about 20 years old if not more. Thanks.

A lot of Marshalls look/looked like the SLP. It's hard to tell you what price it's worth or even more info if you don't say what amp.

I'll try get some more info on them soon. Is there any rough price range for amps of that age that look like that? Should I be expecting to pay under/over 1000?

It's impossible to say. There are a lot of Marshall clones that look like that out there also.

When you say 1959slp, I'm thinking you're talking about the modern 1959 reissue? The 1959 Superlead dates back 40 years. How much originals cost varies hugely depending on the condition of the amp, and the precise year it dates from. '67 '68 and '69 are the years most sought after.

Last I looked, a '70s Superlead head in mediocre condition goes for just under a grand euros on Ebay. But if the iron is bad, it would be practically worthless (a few hundred at best).

Similar looking amps include JTM45/100 and JCM800 series amps. The former predates the 1959 and the latter appeared in the early 70s. It should say on the back panel which model it is, as well as the serial number. There are places on the web where you can use the serial number to establish the exact year of the amp.

Thanks for the help lads. What do you mean if the iron is bad? I'll take a run down to the shop and look for the model numbers. I didn't realise they were on the back.

Sorry, iron=transformers. :) There's a power transformer and an output transformer. They're the most valuable parts of the amp. Without an original output transformer, a valve amp, irregardless of its age, would not be considered "vintage".

I'm not neccessarily looking for a vintage amp, but its that type of amp I'm looking at. I found out that they're Marshall JMP but im not sure what model exactly. What's the value of these?

I've seen new Marshall vintage reissue heads go back for repair because of faulty transformers. RRP of around a €1000.

Might be safer with a slightly older model in good working order.

All of the amps already mentioned were JMPs. You need to know the model, the year, and the functional and cosmetic condition of the amp. They don't have a generic value - it varies widely.

Out of curiosity, what is your objective here? Are you buying an amp to play or an amp for resale? How on earth do you know that these are the type of amp you're looking for if you don't even know what kind of amp it is?

An amp, like anything, is worth what someone will pay for it and no more.

Well, they stopped making most of them two or more decades ago, so good working order doesn't really happen. They'll always need maintenance.

The slightly older reissue of the 1959 was crap by all accounts (thin and fuzzy like a JCM900), and the JCM800 reissue suffered a similar fate. They were PCB jobs with cheap parts and lousy transformers. The newer handwired ones are better sounding, but really, there are cheaper clones that are far better still and more reliable.
