In a local pub last night, went up to the bar to buy myself and a friend a pint. I was a little bit tipsy, (bit noisy, but not drunk) and handed over €50 to the barman. He comes back with change for a tenner. I turn around and ask where the f*ck is the rest of it - without question, he goes back to the till and takes out 2 more €20 notes and gives them to me.

The pub wasn't packed and the barman wasn't ran off his feet at the time, so I can't think of any reason why he could make such a mistake. I was thinking this f*cker thinks I've too much drink to know better about what change I'm supposed to get - should I have said something to the manager or just left it? (I didn't say anything, we left after that pint - had to meet people in a different pub) Bit p!ssed off thinking about it today - fact that he was a non-national is what gets me; don't rip off the locals:mad: And this isn't a stab at non-nationals either.

You should report him to the manager.
No point in doing it when you're drunk though.

I don't think him being a non-national has anything to do with it. He was just a chancer.

He has no nationality? Madness. He deserves to be flogged.

I've often given back the wrong change, for many reasons. Sometimes my head is elsewhere thinking about what I'm gonna have for dinner tomorrow, or thinking that the customer I'm serving is a real dick.

This is a non problem tbh. Human error is unavoidable an more often than not unintentional.

Happened to me in my local on Fri night. Girl behind the bar wasn't too busy, but just plain forgot. She apologised, and I had forgotten about it until now. Meh.

I've been behind the counter and mixed/messed up too. Don't think too much about it :)

This happened to me in Spain this year. I was just about to walk away when i noticed i was 20 euro short changed. I went back and he started laughing and took the 20 out of his pocket and handed it to me. This fecker knew quite well what he was at in my case maybe your barman did too?

By the sound of your post the prick definitely done it on purpose. It's happened to me as well in pubs and the odd time with a taxi trying to rip ya off.

Report it man, or you should have anyway.

I lived in Spain a few years ago and there was a petrol station down the road from my house.

They were nutorious for charging about €1 to each person for Petrol they hadn't bought. There was war caused down there. Found out a few months later that this was practiced a lot in Spain.

I was in a pertol station on the way out of Cork City a while ago and I was charged for milk on my receipt. it wasnt until I went back to the car I copped it. I went back in and walked up to the counter, they guy behind quickly apologised and rushed to serve the next customer, he also printed me off a new receipt. There was no doubt he was trying to pull a fast one. When I tried to question him on it, all of a sudden, being Indian, his level of English dropped dramatically. He wouldnt look at me and moved down the counter.

It was late in the evening so there was no manager to deal with.

I think the issue is that he immediately went to the til and gave him the forty without question, meaning he knew damn right he had short changed him. By the wording of the original post he said "Where's the rest of it!?" as opposed to "I gave you fifty, not ten, give me the extra forty".

I was in Prague a while back and I'm almost certain there were a bunch of dodgy barmen stealing money. Problem is, I've been so spoiled by the euro that their money was like monopoly money to me and I could never for the life of me work out what anything was worth so I just handed over big notes for everything and tried to act like I knew what I was doing.

Lads the barman inputs €50- into the till, the till then tells him how much change to give back.

OP I think the barman tried to rip you.

Not always. Lots of bar and shop people just hit the cash button instead of putting in how much has been given to them.

The fact that he gave the money back doesn't mean anything. Maybe he was having a bad evening and knew his head was elsewhere and believed the OP when he said he gave him the wrong change.

    Mistakes happen.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but it's not the fact that he was short changed, it was the manner of the man serving him.. i.e. He took out another two 20's no questions asked. That leads me to believe he knew he was caught out and just gave up, instead of the usual giving someone the wrong change and being genuinely surprised when they tell you they gave you a 50 or something.

But I absolutely agree with what you're saying, but it's not the OP's issue here.

modern tills have items listed either on the buttons or on the touch screen.. If he only gave you back the change of a tenner he's tried a fast one...

Yep items are listed. There's also an option to input how much money is given in payment. This isn't always used. You can simply hit cash and the amount of change to be given doesn't pop up. It's possible to forget how much was given and give the wrong change. The fact that he gave it back proves nothing.

If you feel that strongly about him "ripping off the locals" go and complain.

This has happened to me a number of times with taxi drivers. Assuming I'm too pissed to noticed that they've hit the "Extras" button and added about €2/3 to the fare just as I'm about to pay. When I ask why the far has shot up I've heard all the excuses, normally something like "oh sorry, the meter must be faulty" etc.

I really should've reported them and I will if it happens again.

I'm a barman and i have made that mistake a few times. Head would be elsewhere was the problem. Give him the benefit of the doubt.

    Ahh, there's always one chancer.

There used to be a lounge girl in my local and we called her "Keep the change <name>".
She would bring the drinks over, put them on the table and walk away with the change.

I was nearly conned out of £10 in Manchester recently. Bought a t-shirt for £9.99 with a £20 note, got one penny in change. I noticed it straight away because I was only carrying 20s. The girl behind the counter spent nearly five minutes telling me I was wrong until a manager came over and opened the till, finding my twenty hidden under a tenner and proving me correct. If it had happened at home I would've made a bigger deal out of it.

i own 2 shops...work on tills 7 days a week. It becomes quite mundane at times, so its v easy to give back wrong change by mistake...

and if you said "where the f**k is the rest of it" like that to me, i'd dispute it just to piss u off tbh.

thats just a scammer. my till tells me what i owe you. There was one time though someone fecked off before collecting their change from a 50. I left it to one side. Sadly they came back for it 20 minutes later :(

Just to let you know a probable reason he didn't make a fuss...

When I worked in bars, things could get hectic and sometimes people simply made mistakes. Typically we would let the springy thing that holds the notes down(has this a name???) up when we put in a note so that if someone claimed they had wrong change you could see exactly which note they gave you.

Other times you would just have put the note in the wrong slot and see it the minute you return to the till.

Hence him not making a fuss and the probability that it was a common mistake. Unless you saw him pocketing any notes throughout the night why would he bother as it only results in the float being off (hassle) and goes into the boss's pocket (hassle for nothing)... His nationality has nothing to do with it.

He didn't pocket anything - took it straight out of the till.

I'm not gonna bother complaining - I believe in karma, the c*nt will get what's coming to him, assuming he tried conning me. Wouldn't want to be responsible for someone losing their job over a misunderstanding.

You're an idiot. I work in a bar and sometimes we can make mistakes like that... If you spoke to me like that, you'd be out the door! Obviously, you're full of bravado as if you really said that to him you would neither get your proper change or another drink!

He gave you a tenner...then went back to the till and gave you two twenties....therefore giving you the drinks for free and you didn't even point out his mistake....you are such a dick. :D
