    So me and a few friends are heading there in the next few weeks and don't want to spend too much money, so we're wondering which would be the best approach to picking up alcohol before we get there;

    Either;

    a) We're flying Dublin-> London Stansted-> Keflavík, so we're thinking of picking up a load of relatively cheap booze in the duty free in London and taking it with us in our hand luggage over to Iceland.

    Or;

    b) Buying stuff in the duty free in Keflavík when we arrive, which may or may not be more expensive :confused:

    Which would be the best option?

    Golden rule for Iceland is always bring duty free booze with you. With the current favourable currency rates the cost of beer is not too bad in cafés and bars, but as with the locals, drink lots before you go out… and on Friday/Saturday nights don’t expect Reykjavík to really get started until after midnight and don’t expect to go home before 7am :D

    If you flying Dublin-> Stansted-> Keflavík then technically you can buy duty free at all 3 airports. Of course legally if you buy in Dublin then you could reach your duty free import limit. So if you buy again in Stansted and Keflavík, Icelandic customs would be in the right to confiscate additional from you. (Note to mods, I am not suggesting breaking the law).

    If you want the ‘hard stuff’ then Dublin is probably better, but for beer just wait and buy in Keflavík. A 6 pack (50 cl. cans) of local brew - Egils Gull, Thule or Víking - will set you back around 850 ISK / 6.80 Euro. You can get the international stuff Heineken, Carlsberg, etc. but the local beers are good… Egils and Thule are my favourites.

    Some people get confused about the location of the arrivals duty free in Keflavík… follow the signs for baggage claim and immediately before the main concourse descend stairs to baggage claim area. Arrivals duty free is on left, opposite the baggage carousels. Two months back friends of mine went to the departures duty free in the main concourse and it caused all sorts of problems at the payment desk.

    Check out Keflavík airport duty free
