I love the screen on D'olier street. Screen number 1 in there is probably my favourite place to watch a movie but I dont go there much because they dont have a whole lot of variety.

After that I like the IFC. Its just got a pretty unique atmosphere and you dont get the annoying kids or chavy teens (or "adults" who still act like chavy teens) whose lives are so important they cannot go 90 minutes without constant contact with their peeps:rolleyes:

I always go to the Vue though if I fancy seeing something overhyped while having the staff rob money from my wallet.....its the handiest to drive too and get parking.

Have the unlimited card for there and I'm about 20 mins walk away so its quite handy for me ...

Most of the screens are fairly decent as well (that said I've not been to any other cinemas in dublin and will only probably end up going to the IFC)

I like the fact you can bring in your own stuff as well ... after having to put up with cinemas in galway searching your bag it makes a nice change.

    Lighthouse.

Show foreign films that you have to either speak a foreign language or be able to read to follow and it cuts right down on the scang factor.

Looking very forward to going there, looks very cool.

They have'nt really had anything so far that has taken my fancy though.

When I heard it was opening I was hoping they would focus a bit more on older stuff and run director retrospectives but unfortunately that doesnt seem to be the case.

Think most of the cinemas have their strong points.

For blockbusters, Cineworld is grand (pretty much all the screens are good quality) but Dun Laoghaire has a couple of digital screens which is a big bonus (problem is the screens without digital aren't great).

Lighthouse is the best for atmosphere and comfort (great seats altogether). Problem is their timetable is a bit limited sometimes, and doesn't change as often as it should.

And the IFI for sheer quantity - different films every week, and the ability to show even the most obscure and unprofitable of releases, which the Lighthouse has yet to offer. But nowhere near as comfortable as Lighthouse, in particular the unpleasntly cramped Screen 2 upstairs.

Really depends on the film when choosing a cinema IMO.

The Lighthouse is probably the most enjoyable, with Cineworld having good enough variety, while The Savoy has a good screen but cramped seating.

Cineworld have a bar which is pretty handy

Overall I'd say Cineworld is the best, followed by the IFI and screen 1 and 2 in the Savoy.

Have yet to visit the Lighthouse but it's been on my to-do list for a while. Not many people I know will take the trip up to Smithfield!

It's a great place, and the staff are lovely. The design looks very Kubrick-influenced. I bet it will start cropping up in a lot of Irish movies now.

Have you seen Man On Wire? It's a really gripping documentary about the guy who wire-walked from one Twin Tower to the other in 1974. That's running there now.

Santry Omniplex is quite alright, except for intermittent sound problems every now and then.

For the major releases I go to the Savoy 1. Great wide cinema and comfortable. This goes back a long way to seeing the premiere of Live and let die.

Savoy and IFI are the best. Cineworld is just a department store posing as a cinema. Ghastly place. Might as well call it "McMovies on Parnell St."

My god! The Screen is the biggest dump of a cinema I've ever graced. Rock-hard seats, poor selection of movies (even more a more alternative cinema), dreadful acoustics (you'll hear as much of the soundtrack from the next-door screen as the film you're watching sometimes) and ignorant staff. That, and the fact that they repeatedly print the incorrect timetables in the press, advertising movies at incorrect times or even before they've been released.

Savoy is great for that unquantifiable cinema experience, but Screen 1 excepted, the screen quality isnt great.

Cineworld tips the scale for me when it comes to selection of movies, quality of screen/audio/seats/food and the unlimited card.

Presume its just Dublin we're talking about here? The Brits and the Yanks do cinema far better than us! ;)

I used to love screen 1 the IFI when it was known as the IFC. They used to allow you bring your drinks into the scren with you. One of my fav experiences was watching the first 2 Godfather flicks there while enjoying a Guinness at the same time!

After that I would say Dundrum cinema. Less scangers there and plenty of legroom. havent been to all cinemas in dublin tho.

One chain that I feel has gone downhill over the last 10 years is UCI. Im not sure if they still have it setup this way, but i remember going there not long after they reintroduced premier seats. The cinema in Blanch cut off had new regular seats that didnt go very high up thus you had no head or neck support. That was the last straw for me.

Such a difficult question to answer due to the lack of choice and then the lack of quality within that restricted choice.

I like STORM in Limerick, has crisp sound however,

I will pledge my allegiance to the picture house that puts a concerted effort into denying entry to Knacks and tangibly policing talkers, messers and talking/messing kids. I'm going to restrict myself from descending into a rant here....

Cineworld is my favourite good screens, thers a bar there and not much messing go's on.

UCI Blanch is the worst, full of teenage skangers talking and laughing all the way thru movies, messing with their mobiles and kicking seats, the staff never tell anyone to shut up. The place has also really gone to the dogs generally over the years, was a good cinema when it first opened over 10 years ago.

I really like my local cinema, even if they hae a habit of showing the film out of focus, suddenly stopping the film mid scene, keeping the lights on, projecting on the roof, ect.

It's one saving grace is that you can go see a film opening night and watch the latest release all on your own in the biggest screen.

I'm going to throw my local cinema movies@swords into the mix, particularly the lovely VIP screening room. Hardly ever get tossers annoying and I have never had problems with the sound or image.

I didn't like Swords. Seats arent comfy, drinks wont sit right in the cup-holders and they have pepsi instead of coke!

I was only there around its opening week, so things may have changed since then.

The website is easy to use, the VIP screen has lovely comfy seats. The regular screen has comfy seat but the edge seats have 3 holders for 4 seats which is the 1 gripe I have. They are comfy enough. Don't care about Pepsi or Coke, drink neither.
