I'm currently in an area only serviced by MMDS from NTL, so I'm limited to an very expensive DSL line, have heard they're are trials going on with NTL to offer a broadband and phone option through this service, anyone know about this, time frames ,feasibility if at all, have FTA atm and can't see the point in their basic digital package without this as I nearly get all these channels anyway.

The current MMDS service cannot offer any data or voice services, it just delivers TV.
There was some story about a year ago of NTL "in talks" with another BB provider (partner) to offer a subsidised BB service. I assumed this would have to be wireless.

Was a nice story - nothing came of it.

IMHO - don't hold your breath waiting for such as service.

NTL cable areas have all of this, MMDS will not get it.

Just in North Dublin/Finglas so UPC can evaluate the idea.

If UPC regards it as a good idea, the actuall BB/Phone may be a different system depending on area as Digiweb has about 8 different Wireless BB systems. They may standardise on a single system.

However the decison about a Nationwide BB/Phone for MMDS uses hinges with results of the Finglas/North Dublin trial.

Hmm, so if results are good, will UPC will partner with one BB supplier, or will they have multiple partners?
Unfortunately, BB is not available in all areas that have MMDS, however.. if UPC gave a wireless operator permission to site on their existing MMDS masts, that should ensure MMDS customers can get a wireless BB service (= phone + data I assume).

That would be a great synergy & a re-use of scarce hard to get high sites.

You can be sure that the BB would be available (well almost sure) to all MMDS customers if the idea progressed.

A lot of the masts may not belong to UPC though, but that is not actually a problem if there is a customer base.

We will have to wait and see.

From Comreg's consultation Spectrum Management Strategy Statement 2008 - 2010 (Jul 2008) - UPC submission

    23. a. Further to the above, UPC Ireland would make the following observations :

iii. UPC Ireland’s current ComReg Trial which tests the offer of two-way services to our MMDS base (by using the return path in the 2300 -2400 Mhz band) would seem to support the EU’s policy objective to extend the offer of services in the 2500-2690 Mhz band to include broadband access services. The Trial, which has been hugely successful, clearly demonstrates that UPC Ireland, subject to a concession on its MMDS Licences, could offer such services to its MMDS customer base.
