    First of all, sorry if this is the wrong fourm, didn't know where to go,

    so here's the deal, turned on the lappy there today - and got some weird message - about how the computer didn't shut down probably - and that some scan will be done (you will not lose any personal files etc.) so went ahead with it - finally get it all done, but on my destop i've lost a number of programmes, maily poker related programs, like ppp poker and pokertracker 3 etc, also the way i had the home pages set up in internet explorer are back to the origianl way as when i bought it. and my favourite are all put in order, so bacially what i want to know - can i get back to the way i was - i have restarted the lappy but that didn't work.

    Now as you may or may not know - programmes like pokertracker are bought and registered programmes - so i don't want to have to repay obv.

    the files are still in the "Program Files" on the C - drive - but the actually application is not.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks

    You're using that paragon of Operating Systems, Microsoft's Windows. Perhaps now you understand why Linux users say it's crap!

    Anyway, the problem is that you probably switched off the machine without closing down the machine cleanly. This results in the Windows cache not being flushed to disk (there were bits of files that were held in memory but not written away safely to the hard disk), so the files on teh disk ended up in an unknown state. When Windows discovered that it had screwed up, it tried to fix it, but couldn't and now you're left with damaged files.

    So, you now have some parts of your paid-for apps knackered on your hard disk. I suggest trying to re-install them. It is likely that the registration information is intact since this is usually static on the system and won't have been corrupted, so a reinstall will actually recover them.

    Let this be a lesson: either use a real operating system or shut down your machine carefully!

    I'd say the programs are probably fine, it's just your windows profile got borked from not shutting down properly so has reset your desktop, start menu, etc. Or you could be seeing the beginnings of a hard disk failure...

    you could try a system restore, to an earlier date, before things were fecked up, but if it was some sort of disk corruption, only solution might be to reinstall the affected apps

    start->programs->accessories->system tools->system restore

    If they were on the desktop then it sounds like it was just the shortcuts were removed. You should be able to make a new shortcut on the desktop from the original application file in the relevant Program Folder.

    Definitely try a System Restore to an earlier date first, as another poster suggested. If that doesn't work, you can always restore it forward again.

    Would go with the user profile error as its unlikey that hard-drive failure would target certain applications and user settings.

    Do you mean that pokertracker.exe (or whatever the .exe file is that you use to launch the application) is not in the program files ?

    As a dedicated linux user....I can safely say that this is not the case. I think windows has become a very decent OS since Windows 2000. Linux just suits me better.
