The newest firmware for the Eircom 2247 is 7.8.0r2
Eircom are shipping this with the 2247 for new customers.
For existing customers go to http://support.eircom.net/Netopia2247 to download it.

They've had 7.8.0r2 for download since May I think.

Yes, 7.8.0r2 has been around a while, but this is the current and latest version. Eircom Netopia users should only download firmware from either eircom.net or from netopia.com With any other site, you don't know what you are downloading.

Tried upgrading tonight, fails every time.

    I'm currently running 7.6.0r3.
Do you have to upgrade to an intermediate FW before 7.8.0r2 ?

Download the file, store it locally on your desktop and upload it to the Netopia

You are doing everything correctly and you are right in that you cannot go from 7.6.0r3 straight to 7.8.0r2. Assuming your model is the 2247, go to http://www.netopia.com/support/hardware/2247w.html and download the 7.7.4r1 from there first, then upgrade to 7.8.0r2 afterwards.

    Model = 2247NWG-VGx

Tried the 7.7.4r1 file, same problems.

I noticed this when using the CLI command "show info-all"

Seems to be the same error for each .bin file I try.

File update failed. Click here to go back to previous page

Just be aware that the 7.8 firmware will not allow you to put the netopia in bridge mode. When you try it crashes the router and you have to do a hard reset. 7.7 is fine and you can downgrade a 7.8 router to it without any problems.

This is only relevant if you use another hardware firewall behind the netopia (i.e. Cisco, Sonicwall etc).
If you are only using the netopia then you are fine.

From CLI, could you type status and give me the first two lines of output from that, basically the lines Netopia Model... and Running Netopia...

Thanks for that, it worked for me but no noticable change, except for when I do speedtest it says Ireland on Line instead of esat.

Tried using a tftp server (in case there was something weird going on with http), still failed.
File uploads ok (or at least the tftp server shows it uploading), get lots of "......" on the screen, but the 2247 complains about the image being wrong.

Says "Firmware Load Failed: Invalid file"

    Happens with nwta774r1.bin and nta780r2.bin :(

Sorry, just noticed your post now.

Ok, I think we are getting somewhere now. There are two different 2247 routers, the older one 2247NWG-VGx and the newer one 2247-02. Anyone who types status at CLI and gets the following output

Netopia Model 2247-02 High-Power Wireless DSL Ethernet Managed Switch

can upgrade to 7.8.0r2 no problem. The upgrade is not suitable for the older version of the router, the 2247NWG-VGx.

I think the latest firmware for the older 2247 router is 7.7.0r6 available for download at http://support.eircom.net/images/suppimages/nta770r6.bin

Thanks douglasman, you are spot on, that is the file I needed.

If you google 2247NWG-VGx, the Netopia site says the latest FW is 7.7.4 r1.
    This won't load however.

Is 7.7.0 r6 special Eircom FW?

Guess this is the end of support for older 2247's

The 7.8.0r2 for 2247-02 and the 7.7.0r6 for 2247NWG-VGx on eircom.net have eircom specific config on them, type show config all at CLI and there is nbbs eircom specific stuff there, but other than the config, they are standard. Both these files also make your netopia ADSL2+ compatible, so if eircom ever do upgrade residential customers to ADSL2+, you are good to go.
