A good trick is to not use black, use dark browns instaed, as it wont be so severe!

Greys and navys work well too. It's best to use two shades - a darker shade along your lash line and a lighter one underneath and blend really well.

Apply a medium beige to the whole lid then just start be putting a small line of black or dark brown eyeshadow across the lash line, at least half way up until the actual socket line and then as others said blend until the socket line using a lighter brown or grey if your using black. Line the lower lash line with the lighter colour also. Finish off with black eyeliner on the inside if you like. It's not difficult, just start off with less rather than more and build it up!

Buy one packet of cigarrettes. Remove clear plastic film. Open box. Remove foil tab. Take one cigarrette and place the filter end (beige) between lips. Light the other end whilst drawing air through the cigarrette. Then do something complicated with your two hands so the cigarrette remains in your mouth for an extended period. After minute or so, the smoke will sting your eyes resulting in redness and watering. Do not let your peers see this. It will make you look soft. Remain casual. Done.

Start out with a small amount of eye shadow on your brush and build it up so then you wont go over board with it. Every time you apply some, take a step back and actually look at face and eyes. It's important to blend out all harsh lines to make it look soft.
