ZVs on Euro Plates

    A couple of questions:

    1. I see an increasing amount of ZV registrations on Euro style plates which look awful and is a bit of a contradiction IMO. Why do owners do this? Is it because they are having difficulty sourcing older style plates?

    2. If an owner decides to change from year/county registration to ZV registration does the original year/county number become extinct or is it re-issued?

    Thanks lads. :)

When I got my van in from California I brought it to the VRO and just bought the plates from the first motor factors I found on the way home. All they had were the Euro ones so that's what I got.
After that it kinda sank down the priority list of things to do. Three years later I've replaced the rear one with a blue-with-yellow-letters Californian style one but the Euro one is still on the front. I'm thinking of ditching the front one altogether.

1.. i would say that most owners dont care much for what their reg plate looks like, its as simple as that really
2..I doubt the reg is reissued,i would be very surprised if it was.

    Therein lies the problem!

If they don't care what registration they have, why then do they seek a ZV registration? Why not go for the ordinary year/county plate? Surely the point of the ZV plates was to make it more authentic/suitable looking!

So in 2017,when 1987 cars will be 30 years old:eek:,that will be the last year that ZV plates can be issued for,as the registrations changed over that year.

Errh, does it really matter? I for one find the black plates with aluminium numbers rather... naf. All tastes are around.... ;)

I personally don't like ZV plates (pseudo-old style plates), given the choice if I had a classic, I'd go for a 68-D or whatever type plate. Each to their own though.

And as for the metal silver-on-black plates, unless it's an army vehicle, just don't. ;)

On the other end of things, I remember years ago, there was a guy who lived near me who had a Renault 11 that had the old style black-on-red plates, but it was a new style reg. (84-D if I remember correctly). It just looked wrong.

Each to their own indeed but (and I'm open to correction) the reason that people choose ZVs is to make their plate look more authentic looking than a relatively modern year/county plate. To then place it on a Euro style plate just seems to defeat the whole purpose.

Well, with the newer 5digit ZVs, as in ZV12345,it looks wrong anyway,so you cant win either way.
Where do i apply for a job in the vehicle registration office:mad:....:D

well at least you have a choice of plate style here. In Germany you have to fit these plates if you want the car to be known as a classic car of culture..

    1) Silver on black 'proper' old style plates - Rathgar Motor Factors, down the street between Comans / 108 pub s heading towards Murphy and Gunn Toyota

    2) German style plates - Radiator Services, down the lane opp Barrys Hotel on Gr Denmark st ( off N Frederick St ) - that lane exits opp the Gate theater on Parnell Sq

Ignornace and laziness are the usual reason i'd reckon.

Having said that I have seen the odd 'modern looking' classics that the owners probably use as everday transport which don't look too bad with euro 'ZV' plates. Case in point was a Bently Coupe that I spotted in Kildare a year or two ago. This Porsche also looks much younger than 30 years ...euro plates would'nt look that out-of-place on it?!

I know it doesn't look right, but even if the number isn't period, at least the plate style is. Besides I went for a 73D because it was 6 digits rather than 7 which actually fits the plate in it's correct sized font. ;)
