leasing a membership

Firstly let me tell you a little about myself. I am 41 years old with 2 teenage children living close to Croke park. I play golf once a month with a golf society and possibly once or twice more with friends. As the kids don't get out of bed anymore and the wife works on a Sunday, I feel now is the time to grasp the nettle and join a golf club. I would prefer to join a club within 35-40 minutes drive of the house (early Sunday morning). With the cost of joining clubs still quite expensive at the moment and not being quite sure if I will use it enough to justify the outlay should I go ahead and join a club or possibly Lease a Membership. I would be grateful If anyone could comment on this and possibly suggest 1. where I could lease a membership 2.how much would it cost. 3. Are there any golf clubs (not public courses as they have restricted tee times and I need to get out early) that can offer me low joining fees or possibly a try it and see if you like it option before putting up my hard earned cash

    I lease a membership.

As a form of membership it's great for me. Full 7 day playing rights, no restricions at all other than not having a vote at the AGM. I'm saving for my first house so, like you, a lump sum wasn't what I had in mind.

I pay e1,939 a year - 300 of which comes back to me as a bar levee for drinks and food.

My club is The South County which I picked based on the facilities, course, friendly members and location - roughly in that order.

If you're worried about using it enough I'd pay most attention to location.

I'm bookmarking this as I'm interested in similar but in the Kildare region mainly.

I'm hoping that by january, some excellent offers will be available due to realism from greedy new courses... I may be wrong :(

Surely it's too late in the season to consider spending money on a fee?

Not that I'm a fairweather player or anything I swear  !!

I think your right about location. I played south county on monday and it took me an hour and a half to get home. I think something northside would suit me better

I just sent a message of the the mod of the Golf forum about a new type of 'membership' which Druid Heath will be starting...I think Aug 31st.

From what I understand you pay 400 Euro to register.

Then play in a competion over 20 events.

    Its worth looking at.

I'm in Hollystown and similar to yourself I wanted a try it and see . It's 475 a year for pay as you go membership and I've found it great . about 25mins from you and Comps are from 8am on Sundays. Good clubhouse and a good crowd of people there . I joined on my own last year and will defo be staying another year.

Ill paste the mail I got about it later today even if it is basically an AD it is a new'ish idea.

There are plenty of people who work in Ireland for just a few years who dont want to pay 10k to join a club or even 30k in a share scheme since they know they will be moving back home or to a new country.

A friend of mine moved here and joined my club Woodenbridge and 3 years later he moved again to the states.

He probably paid 100 quid for each round of golf when you add in the Sub..only guessing at the figure.(10 grand to join and 900 a year then)

Of course there are people who live here who would like to try out a club and take up golf for a year or two to see if they really like it.

    http://www.golfhub.com/main.php the number 2 story.

The Druids heath 20 round membership is on front page.

You also get 50% discount on green fee for rounds if you go over your 20 and 25% discount for a guest.

Dont know if you get any discount for Druids Glen but I'd say if your playing in the Heath at least you would hear of good deals for the Glen.

Seems a nice alternative to forking out a load of Euros to join a club.

I'm even tempted but doubt I'd get it by the wife :)

Am I reading this right - it starts in September and ends at the end of this year?

Yeah, no way I'd get 20 games in in that space of time. If it was from now until next April or - the "off-season" effectively - it might be more worthwhile...

At e400 its very good value if you play all the competitions but unfortunately the tee times dont suit. Are there any clubs on the north side of dublin where I can lease a membership

I lease a membership at Killeen Golf Club near KIll

I live in Celbridge so very handy.

You pay the annual sub on the Share that some member is not using and are the memeber for the year, full rights etc. It is organised through the club so no rip-offs etc. The sub this year was around €1,200

At this point in the year I dont know if its worth it, may be best to wait for 09

If you are a more accommplished golfer (or affluent type!:)) I also understand that Carton House run the same scheme for members.

How do you find out about where membership leases are available? Do you contact the clubs directly or do people advertise them somewhere??

I have never seemed them advertised generally

I heard about it from a member, I would talk to the club directly to see if its done.

The sub for Killeen this year was €1,370 (up over €100 from 2007) - hence, I couldn't afford to renew my lease :(

Great option though for anyone who can afford it and will make use of it.

I have contacted most of the clubs that are accessible to me directly and unfortunately most of them don't offer this facility. Rathcore do if that interests you but I am not sure what price they charge If you ring them directly they will give you a price. I did get an email from forrest little that may interest me. In 2008 the club had a Tuesday membership type. This allowed play on a Tuesday (Mar-Mar)only at a cost of €200. This membership may or may not be renewed for 2009. It is geared to non golfers to give an them an introduction to the game of golf.

Has anyone looked at Dunmurry Springs in Kildare? Great course and they just started a new membership drive to fill their membership... played it last week, difficult but very enjoyable. www.dunmurrysprings.ie
I think they also have lease options!?!

The selection south of Dublin is far better than on the North it seems. Lots of decent deals in Wicklow and Kildare... in Meath and North County Dublin there seems to be far less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 donzo112

Contacted Rathcore and they will lease a membership for 900 a year

Why lease when you can join Boystown for 800 euro with no entrance fee.

I very much agree with you there Graeme, Jesus it would be great to get some type of deal going around here. I have a sneaking feeling that Castleknock will offer soemthing different next year..... It would be great if a bit of competition started between them and hollystowns to get down memberships prices.....

    Where is Boystown?

Just found out that Boystown is in Wicklow and that is just a bit too far for me

    Donzo

A pal of mine tells me Corrstown members also lease memberships.

Its out the back of the airport and may be handy for you.

I've emailed Corrstown a few times and never got a reply.

They have been advertsiing memberships recently in the press and seem like they are really needing new members so a deal could possibly be struck.

I got in contact with corrstown and it appears that they offer what they call a playing rights membership which basically allows you playing rights in the club for the annual subscription (e1300 2008 price to include gui, insurance and e150 bar levy. 2009 as of yet undecided ) with some restrictions. You will not be allowed play on any club teams and although you will be allowed enter, you will not be allowed win any major tournaments.
Roganstown will allow members nominate another person to fill there place if they want to take a break from membership for a year. They are not sure as of yet whether any places will become available for 2009.
Castleknock have replied to my mail and they are offering an option with no joining fee. the annual subscription is e2750+vat. You would need to play a lot of golf to get value for your money at those prices, although if you join now you will get the rest of the year free of charge.
