Shiny Hair

I was in town the other day and I've seen women with gorgeous shiny hair.

My hair is dull - its long, brown - not dyed, type = greasy roots, dry ends. I was every second day, I usually let my hair dry naturally, and whenever I use a hairdryer or straightners i use a heat protection spray.

So my question for all of those ladies with shiny hair is how do you get your hair so shiny. Do you go to the hairdressers regularly for a wash and blowdry or something.

I'll have a night out in a few months time, and i really don't want to look like I've got hay on my head.

I find Joico shampoo and Conditioner great. I always get comments on how shiney my hair is and I have blonde hair so it is hard to get a nice shine on your hair. You can get Joico hair products in most hair salons and it costs €12 for a big bottle which lasts approx 3 weeks.

Ha I used to have shiny hair before I got hi-lights a while back, never realised those freaking things left your hair so brittle. For a natural approach to it, watch your diet, drink plenty of water, take Omega-3 supplements or make sure you take oily foods in your diet, do you like fish? Eat mackerel, avocados, nuts, not lots, just some... it will help your skin, hair and nails.

For the quick fix approach, I always went and got a semi permanent colour a shade darker than my own and it came out a lovely conker brown that had a really good shine to it. they're much kinder on the hair with no peroxide but maybe some ammonia depends on type. Ask the salon. Blast your hair with freezing water after you've rinsed it at end of every wash. ...use a cold drying setting towards end of blow dry to reduce the follicles down to give it smoothness....eh, don't get hi-lights!

Has anyone else had that problem and conquered it? I've been trying every conditioner on god's earth and it's still very brittle? any avice would be appreciated, A

    Hi darling.x,

I wonder is the water where you live hard water?
hard water can cause your hair to become dull, because of high levels of minerals in the water.

To combat this I use a cap full of cider vinegar added to a jug of water for the final rinse of my hair.
I find this especially useful lately as I too have highlights like you amanda,

Since getting them my hair has lost its glossy shine, and is knotty and tangled, which it never was before :(
using the vinegar rinse helps alot in adding some shine and stops the tangles too.

Where do you get that vinegar eefy?
I think hard water can give a green tinge to blonde highlights too - does anyone know any shampoos that help stop this?

Must try it, thanks eefy. You can get cider vinegar at Holland & Barrets or any good healthfood store. Will try. Incidentally I take apple cider tabs sometimes to help with stiff joints and hair and skin was in better nick then...wonder if it's conincidence or no?!! Ta ladies.

you can get cider vinegar in most supermarkets, I got mine in a health food shop, its organic, not sure if that would make a difference, but there wasn't much difference in price.

I looked into shampoo for hard water,
LUSH do a solid shampoo bar to combat effects of hard water, but I found it rubbish tbh

I have heard this stuff is good but I haven't tried it

Try linco beer shampoo it makes hair v shiny or the body shop alive shampoo (you can buy little mini trial bottles) and also aussie three minute miracle. even tho u have greasy roots and dry ends ( i have the same), dont use a shampoo for greasy hair cos it will dry it and ironically I find makes it more greasy! only put conditioner on the ends if your hair not on the scalp

any of the temporary colours also give a great shine like the shaders and toners one or the john frieda gloss - it comes in colours but also a clear one. If you dont want to colour, try the clear one of this after your shampoo it seriously shines hair! wouldnt use everyday as it does make it a bit greasy but for a night out its top class

and yes cider vineagr is great!

I have too much limescale in my water which was making my hair green. I was afraid that I would start looking like the hulk so I asked a few hairdressers what is the best shampoo for removing chemical build up and I was told Joico Violet Shampoo. Its purple shampoo which removes the green look from your hair, it does work but when I went to buy another bottle the girl told me not to use it too much because it can turn your hair grey! I think the only thing you can do to avoid "the hulk" look is get a water conditioner put into your tank

I can't get my hair to shine either, maybe because its curly? :( I've tried the blast of cold water as the last rinse trick, didn't work for me unfortunately. Might the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle a go!

+1 for semi-permanant dye and the blast of cold water.

You could also try serum just warm it up in the palms of your hands before you use it. Also since you have long hair split ends can make your hair look dull so go for regular trims.

I find Revlon shampoo makes your hair shiney.

You could try putting some olive oil on your hair for a while before you wash it. I have long straight hair & always turns out really silky after I do that, mind you I only do it every now & again.

I definitely think giving my hair a quick rinse in cold water everytime I wash it makes a difference. I use a decent hairdryer, not a weak whimpering one (Peter Marks Turbo Stratus - best hairdryer I have ever used) along with a brush that contains natural bristles and Tresemme Heat Protector Spray (purple stripe). The strong airflow from the hairdyer, when held over the head and never from below, smooths the cuticles down flat, which in turn makes them shine more. Natural bristle brushes are also excellent for giving your hair some shine.

After drying my hair with these, I also give my hair a quick blast with the cold shot on the hairdryer too. If I let my hair dry naturally it goes frizzy and fuzzy and awfully dull. Since starting the routine above about 2 months ago, all my friends and workmates have been commenting on how healthy and shiny my hair looks. They keep asking me did I have it done!

Everyone's hair is different but thats just what works for me :)

Is your hair curly? What shampoo/conditioner and styling products do you use? Have you had a cut lately?

I'd say get your hair trimmed regularly, try and find a good shine shampoo or one that works for your hair without leaving it greasy etc and watch your diet i.e. drink a good amount of water and eat foods that are good for your hair :)

A blast of cold water definitely helps my hair stay shiny anyway.
I've never dyed it though and am resisting temptation to do so, I'm afraid it'll do exactly what people above were saying it would.

I also find that changing shampoo every few months helps.
At the moment I use Herbal Essences shampoos [the green one and the blue one], but as my hair has a tendancy to get very greasy I don't use conditioner ever.
I've been told to but then hairdressers always comment on my hair being in great condition so I don't think it's essential.

Cold blasts of hair from the dryer works too but my new one doesn't have that feature :(

    Regular trims help too.
