Flights secured for Great Escapes passengers
    Thursday, 28 August 2008 01:35

The Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) has said that it has secured two more flights for passengers who have been inconvenienced by the collapse of tour operator Great Escapes.

This means that of the four flights which were outstanding this morning only one still has to be accommodated.

The Commission says that all of those holidaymakers who were abroad should be able to return home without too much inconvenience to their original travel plans.

The first of these flights is due to return on Friday.

Great Escapes, which was based in Swinford, ceased trading with immediate effect.

A recorded message on the tour operator's switchboard this morning broke news to customers that the firm is no longer operating.

Another 400 people who were due to fly from Ireland in the coming weeks have also lost out on their holidays.

The CAR says it is extremely unlikely that existing bookings made with the company will be honoured.

The company is also known as Ronane Travel Ltd. Customers can contact the commission to claim a refund.

It has already organised a return flight for a group of 79 people currently in Portugal - that group will arrive into Knock Airport as scheduled tomorrow night at 9pm.

A statement from Ronane Travel Ltd said the: '[The company] very much regrets the inconvenience caused to its customers and is co-operating fully with the Commission for Aviation Regulation in resolving the present difficulties.'

Almost 500 Irish people currently on holiday abroad face serious disruption after a Mayo-based tour operator ceased trading yesterday.

The Commission for Aviation Regulation is currently trying to organise return flights for the holidaymakers who are currently in Spain, Portugal, Lanzarote and Crete.

Great Escapes, based in Swinford, County Mayo went out of business yesterday.

All of its customers are asked to contact the Commission for Aviation Regulation to apply for a refund.

489 people were due to fly back to Knock Airport this Thursday, Friday and Monday. The Commission for Aviation Regulation says it has organised replacement flights for a group of 79 people due to fly back from Faro in Portugal tomorrow. It has almost fully organised flights for a total of 269 people due to return from Reus, in Spain, and Lanzarote on Friday.

It says it is working on trying to get flights for 141 people due to fly back from Heraklion in Crete on Monday.
