Well not sure about TV but I do know that Disney have a strict regime of releasing their DVD's on a Bi-Annual basis where by they pick and choose which movies to release. I was tormented for the 2 and a half years in Xtra-vision by people coming in looking for those classic Disney films. We only got them in, in controlled batches and they promptly grew legs and did a Usain Bolt out the door. I would presume they apply the same controls with regards to the TV.

I think that Disney Cinemovie shows them on Sky (which you get when you subscribe to Sky Movies) so maybe that channel only gets the rights.

Disney is horrible for releasing stuff.

Cant say Im a big fan of the older Disney cartoons (dont get me wrong I really like them but I wouldnt seek them out on DVD) but my heart always breaks when I hear they have acquired the rights of one of my favourite films.

Of course it also means stuff they do release is usually extortionate in price. Its quite frustrating though that stuff like the Lion King I genuinely have not seen since it was released in the cinema.

Disney sell loads of stuff to TV, just not thier animated classics. Before home video they used to have a 7 year cycle for cinema re-issues. Hence the summer/Christmas/Easter trip to see Snow White or whatever as a kid.

Disney don't even show them on their own channels! They always show the lion king 4 or conderella 9: the redeadenning or some other rubbish made for TV sequel... maybe it's too expensive for channels to get the rights to show them?

i love the old classic disney movies, to be more exact the first 5, snow white(37), pinocio(40), fantasia(40), dumbo(41) and bambi(42). i have the last 3 but to get the first two you'd have to buy it online cause its not in the shops and for 70 to 100 euro each just for a dvd.

    Dragging up an old thread...

Disney movies were cycled every seven years because they kept them under very strict control to create demand, they basically vaulted the movies for the rest of the time keeping them under strict guard. Wven when VHS started to take off they were fiercely protective of them & ignored the format for years.

Eventually giving in when Beta disappeared off the market & releasing Snow White "for the only time ever" on a strict six month window. They charged a whopping $69.99 for the cassette back in the mid eighties & it sold out in days. They then planned to re-release the rest of the films in limited quantities & continue to this day, having said that, the limited quantities could be five million copies.

They've got a release slate of three BluRays a year for the next twelve years of their back catalogue (fantasia/fantasia2000 are coming out together this year giving four releases). Personally, I've got all them on DVD but have started rebuying them on BD as there's about ten releases (including the pixars) right now & the quality is stunning. Unusually Snow White didn't get the premier spot on BD, but that was because sleeping beauty was due for release.

There's an excellent book called "Disney Wars" if you're interested in the boardroom side of things.

Good site for release dates: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/

They don't just do animation - plenty of old Disney movies such as Old Yeller appear on TV.
