Has the more current VW Polo got anything mechanical in common with a Corsa, gearbox maybe. I'm just wondering why they sound so alike.

The current Corsa is based on the Fiat Grande Punto, neither car have anything in common with the Polo afaik.

The Polo shares the same underpinings with the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia though.

The 1.2 engine in the Polo is (or at least was) a 3 cylinder engine. One of the Corsa engines (I think the 1.0 Litre) is also a 3 cylinder - perhaps why they sound similar.

I would highly doubt it, however for obvious reasons, if you drive a 1.2 Polo and a 1.2 Ibiza they sound almost identical (because they are :P).

Polo > Corsa by the way!
