The Crunch gym in UCD is about 30 mins walk/5-10 minutes drive. It's fairly cheap (not sure what the price is for a non-student, though I understand its very reasonable). It has everything you'll need for cardio and only an advanced bodybuilder would be disappointed with the free weights section. The main disadvantage is it has no swimming pool.

Ah but there is a swimming pool to come (here)!! That said I wouldn't hold your breath, it will probably be some time in the next eight years.

The gym itself is alright, there are countless threads you can find in here to get an idea of what it's like. You get what you pay for, it does the trick. The weights room is a disaster, there is no order, things frequently fall apart /go missing /get welded instead of replaced (last oly bar to break) and there was some nice cosy rosemantic lighting in the bench room for a while there before they eventually replaced the lightbulbs.

But on the plus side, it is cheap, it's convenient and you get your workout done. There are cheap offers on joining every September in the first few weeks back so I'd avail of that, its usually around 160e or something like that for the year so you cant go too far wrong. Failing that try it out first, 7e a session.

That's true, but that said, we still go there.... It doesn't give enough to merit a thread praising it, and it makes us feel better to give out about all the things that give us grief! Membership deals at the moment are 170e for the year (saw them on my way into work this morning) so it fills your financial criteria... like I said, might be worthwhile going and having a look see what you think yourself. I have a feeling Dundrum will be significantly more expensive, I haven't heard anything about it.

thanks Bui (I'm also interested in joining UCD) What are the eomen's changing rooms / showers like? Do they get very busy, is there much /any waiting around for a shower?

    thanks :)

Depends on two things: (1) If you are a member and (2) what time you go at.

If you join crunch in ucd there are seperate changing rooms to the general changing rooms for the sports center, they're grand, usual job, lockers, toilet & showers. Nothing special but they're clean and do the job! I generally go late in the evenings any time between 6 and 10 so its quiet enough, given that around 5-7ish its generally going to be busier with after work people, but otherwise there are few enough people there.

I've joined Total Fitness in Sandyford, about a 10 min drive from Dundrum, or a 20 min cycle up a giant hill.

I like the variety of stuff you can do there. A good selection of weights, big pool/hydrotherepy stuff, plenty of cardio machines, squash courts and classes if you're feeling de-motivated!

Works out at 675 per year.

There's a place down in Dartry - L.A. Fitness, that's in much better shape than Belfield. Having said that it's a good bit more expensive and the weights room is quite small.
If you're not into really heavy lifting it's fine
