Browser questions

Couldn't find a suitable forum for this so I'm hoping you webheads might know.

    1. Let's say I'm watching a youtube video, and I click play. The focus is then on the flash object and the browser keyboard shortcuts stop working. Is there any way to change the focus back to the browser without clicking?

    2. Back in the old days before tabbed browsing, you'd open a new window and it would open at the same page you were at, and you could go back and forward too. How do I do this in tabbed browsers?

Re 2: In HTML, the same way it was always done. Bear in mind however that browers can be configured to work differently depending on the users preferences, and you should do nothing to interfere with that.

Not really the right forum, but here's your answers anyway:

#1 - just click anywhere on the page that's not the flash movie.

#2 - Depends on the browser. In IE i think you can set it in the options, in Firefox I think you need the 'Tab Browser Preferences' extension.

    1. I'm asking for a way to do it without clicking. It's practically the only use I have left for the mouse!

    2. I've definitely done it accidentally in Firefox before with some keyboard shortcut. It just doesn't seem to be documented

As this isn't a web dev query, I'm going to pass this to Computers & Technology.

This is the old objects written to the desktop not the browser situation. Basically when a form, flash movie, java applet is run, it is not displayed in the browser window but actually on the desktop and the browser 'makes a hole' to let it show through. As a result the focus is on the desktop not the browser even though the title bar appears active. Some keyboard keys still work, but for the video only - e.g. left and right arrows for ffwdd and frwnd.

Try looking for an Add-on which can do this.
