Cue For Beginner

Having played a fair bit of pool over the years, now I have got in to the snooker craze. I would like to get a cue of my own to help with the development of my game. I've looked a numerous cue sites, and I am a little confused about what I should be getting. I do realise that it's not an exact science as to whether a player gets along with a cue. Do you recommend any stockists in this country (esp. in the west or Dublin) to get me set up? Or should I buy on ebay or another website?

I would like an extension to come with the cue, since there is none where I play. I would have a budget of about €120 for the equipment, though that figure is flexible.

Hey, I bought my current cue from http://www.thecuedoctor.co.uk/ a very well known and established shop in Leeds, you buy online and they ship over within 10 days I think. I bought a four piece cue with a case, I think I spend over 500 euro but then again I was playing the likes of David Morris, you should get a decent cue for under the 200 mark. Just buy a telescopic screw on extension for it, probably about 30 quid. Give him a ring.

Edit: Just make sure to buy a cue doctor cue and not a cooper or BCE, they're more expensive but oh so worth it! I have a break of 145 with my one by the way..

Having been a player for quite some time I do find that a good English `made` cue is best. Never mind cues with players names on them, when you buy those you give the likes of Jimmy White and Ronnie O Sullivan a tenner for something that does not resemble their own cue in any shape or form. The oldest and best cue makers in the world is Peradon of Liverpool. Any good billiard shop will stock their cues, and I believe that Peradon will guarantee their cues for life (with the exception of warping, which 99 times out of 100 is the customer fault).
Go for an ash shaft cue with a plain ebony butt. Also when you are inspecting the butt of the cue, make sure that the butt is not a `simulated butt` ie: Painted on to resemble ebony hand splicing. Get a good rigid case, and look after your cue... if you do, it will be your cue for life.
    Good luck.

I wouldnt buy I cue without playing with it first. I did it once and there was no feel whatsoever in it for me but my brother loves it. I dont agree with spending alot on a special order cue, I know a few people who just bought a cue they liked from the snooker club after playing with it for a few evenings. Remember stephen hendry had a cue like a banana for years. Ken Doherty picked up his in a club I think.

Does the cue make a lot of difference to the average player.?
It sound like you would need to play a lot to appreciate a good cue. A bit like playing golf maybe.??

The cue does make a difference, even to the average player. The size of the tip, how rounded it is, how heavy the cue is etc.... all make a difference

What is a typical price for a reasonably good cue.?
I plan to play one a week with some friends.
There are lots of cues in the snooker hall, but they all seem so disserent, even crooked.
