BSc/Dip Information Systems (Part time/evening)

    Howdy,

Saw this ad when it came through on the system there today, interests me as I thought the IS course was sunk with all hands a few years back (I had intended to apply for it in 2003 but it was axed before I applied).

Everything about it looks like it hits the right notes, evening course, located in lovely Trinners, dip after two years (hoping my few years in DCU's CAIS might count for something) and possibility to go for the BSc right after.

As it doesn't start until October, and I could do with some nice quals, I was wondering if anyone in the CS department (or anyone) knows anything of this?

Herr Crash mentioned here about it being cut before, funny that...

Does it have the course director/co-ordinator up on the system yet? If not, and if no-one else answers you should e-mail Mike Brady since he's generally a nice guy who'll sort you out with a good answer in CS (and who gets involved in this type of thing, so may indeed be the person you're looking for).

Hmmm... Sounds fairly interesting. I'd even be tempted to go back to do something like that myself, maybe. Evening study would be tough though.

/wanders off to investigate some more about the course.

Cheers for the info! We shall see where this goes...

This would be surprising considering they took up a advertisement on boards.ie yesterday, with "Commencing Oct 08" as a part of the ad, but someones information may (ironically) be out of date.

The course website doesn't mention anything about whether or not it's on this year. Looks reasonably up to date though so it could well be launching back this year. Timetable doesn't look too bad with only 3 days a week of 3 hours, and the subjects look a lot more business-focused than any boring CS I've done before.

My mistake, Its the BSc in computer science which definitely won't be back this year, no idea about the one in IS.

Ok, so for anyone interested (like Ronnie), I applied for this course and was accepted for advanced entry based on previous course and my current line of work.

Induction night next week, looking forward to it :)

Congrats Ross - this is quite weird, thought IS and a couple of others were all cut a couple of years back.

Does this mean I have to put up being in the same college as you again?

Possibly. You could end up not being taken into entry level positions on the back of having a masters.

Go annoy the maths department about giving classes for the first few months again.

Thanks Ross but to be honest I've no idea why I thought it was a good idea in the first place. It seems like an interesting course and all but it's the kind of thing I'd get bored of after a couple of months.

    Enjoy it though.

Starting to feel the same myself now, doubt I'll keep it up. Wish I'd realized this before I applied!

What is boring you with this course?

Project Management and Enterprise Architecture... they're largely irrelevant to me, and the lecturer for Project Management couldn't explain the formulas they use (with seemingly arbitrary numbers) beyond "that's what it is in all the project management books".

Communications Technology, while interesting, is far too much of an endurance trial to remain attentive in for a solid two hour lecture.

And then largely I just took on a course where I had no idea how much work was going to be required from me. I'm pretty much flat out with boards.ie as it is, amongst other things, and I simply can't dedicate the time to this. It's a full undergrad course crammed into three evenings a week and then the untold hundreds of hours of additional work.

At the end of the day I probably decided too hastily, I was expecting something different, more relaxed, more individual, and more technical in nature.

Im actually on this course too it is quite a bit of work involved the three evenings being only a minor part as you need to be able to understand what the hell the lecture was about at a different point as they do just seem to to throw concepts at you and expect you to go off and really learn/understand them yourself.

I am looking at the possibility of this course next year, is it really boring? and how much extra study time is expected? Can you list the + and - in relation to the material, tutors, hours etc

I come from a technical backround and on paper this looks like it might be the ticket into a more senior/management role.

    Cheers

Can anyone list any suggested reading for the course?
