Sorry if this sounds dumb to you guys..... BUT, I have a 6 yr old who would like to learn the piano, and if she goes ahead with lessons, how soon should I start looking at getting a PIANO.... (for practise, I'm guessing :) ) ?
    Many thanks !

I think you'd be crazy if you bought a piano right away. You have to remember, kids go through phases so your 6 year old might like it now, but maybe not in a couple of weeks or a month or two time.

You could get a keyboard on the cheap just for learning purposes to begin with. I know the keys are heavier on an actual piano but there are also keyboards with weighted keys that you could move onto if things are going well - you wouldn't necessarily have to go forking out for a piano just yet!

I would say get him/her started with the lessons, see how it goes and if all is well in a couple of months, then consider getting a piano.
    That's just my opinion!! ;)

Good advice above, make sure the kid enjoys it and will stick to it before investing in a piano. One thing I would advise against is getting a cheap 'starter' instrument. The build quality, sound and feel all tend to be very poor and would work against learning.

If the instrument sounds/feels poo your kid will think its them and not the instrument, its a confidence killer. Seen it happen a few times.
