new drive setup

new sata hard drive and operating system (xp 64 bit) are not registering when I boot up PC.I have even disconnected all other IDE drives to motherboard. So I am guessing there is something wrong in DEL setup screen.
my old ide drive is knackered, hence upgrade, although i have been switching back and forth copying files from old IDE to new sata, however now the sata drive is not registering as primary drive, even though it is listed as only drive under main screen under DEl.

so can anyone please tell me exactly how i should have this ?

also, how do i nominate an ide drive as a slave to the sata ? is this possible ?

many thanks for help in advance !

make sure the jumpers are in the right config, they are a liitle connecter that connects two littl pins on the back of the drive, it will say on the drive what way to set them

sata drives dont need to have jumpers set, id say its a matter or drivers to be honest, I take it you are trying to do a fresh install of Xp to the sata drive

I had a similar problem ages ago with a dell machine if i remember i got the sata divers from the dell site or maybe it was from intels site and put them on a floppy disc or a usb key, when you put the xp cd in and it starts set up you will see a prompt to press F6 to install 3rd party drivers .

whats the make and model of the pc?

make and model, well it was a good homebuild until recently !

asus p5ne sli, duo core 3 ghz, 6 gb ram, 8600gt and i just also upgraded my gfx card to a radeon 4650- which i cannot install for obvious reasons !

so, i am stuck in a rut ! sata 1 is not being booted up as primary drive.

it worked fine on old xp32 bit ide drive, then i swapped over to 250gb sata drive - uploaded and installed xp 64bit, then disconnected to reconnect temporarily to old 32bit ide drive, then disconnected to reconnect back to 64bit sata drive ! did not think it would be a big deal to switch back and forth ! clearly i was wrong !

any tips welcome as basically at moment after asus intro screen it goes black (although i can get into the DEL setup screen) !

    thanks

wait so you actually had xp64 installed on the sata? and where swapping the drives in and out and booting to 32 bit on the ide and 64bit on the sata?
could have been done without disconnecting but how and ever, the 64bit install did actually boot at some point, have you tried booting off the cd and explored recovery/repair options from there?

Also does it straight to a black sceen or do you see the loading screen for xp 1st then it goes black?

Edit : might be something of help to you here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314503

stright to black screen, also i cannot attach the old 32bit drive anymore as it just does not work, finally packed in.

windows 64 was running briefly, but since i switched over and back, nothing is happening anymore with sata !

I'm not totally clear on what's happening so please bear with me.

You had 32bit XP installed on your old IDE drive.
You then installed XP64bit onto the sata drive while both the ide and sata drives were connected to the machine meaning you were effectively dual booting for a time? ie before XP loaded it asked you whether you wanted to boot into XP or 64 bit xp?

If the answer to all of the above is yes then you are simply missing the MBR (Master Boot Record) on the sata drive so your machine doesn't know where to boot windows from. Easily fixed by doing a windows repair using the cd.

If the answer to the above was no at any point, have you ever been able to boot into XP 64bit when the IDE drive was disconnected? This is important to know as it rules out the MBR issue and means we can focus efforts elsewhere :)
