Is Core 2 Duo still the best processor?

Gonna get a bog standard laptop, all I'll really use it for is internet and typing up assignments. Might as well still go for the best processor around though. Last time I researched this about 2 years ago, Core 2 Duo was the best processor, is that still the case?

And sure if anyone has any tips on where to find the best and cheapest bog standard laptops, maybe you could let me know as well.

    Cheers.

'Netbooks' are the new big thing ,theyre like mini laptops but apart from DVD ROM drive not lacking in any way from 'ordinary' laptops ...Search out ASUS EEE or Advent 4211

could get annoying using a netbook for typing up assignments, i have the advent 4211 and its fantastic but I would have hated to be using it for my college assignments during the year, although i did have a lot of assignments last year and maybe i could have used it for a limited amount of assignments.

Anyways i got rid of my basic dell a few weeks ago and now have the advent and its great for surfing the net and on the go, which is all i need it for.

I would advise checking out the dell studio laptops on their website, they look decent. also laptops are constantly getting cheaper so many shops have great prices.

Also if you are in college check if your college has a program for laptops and you might be able to get a cheaper one that way, but they tend to be very standard and sometimes dated technology.

Core 2 Duo is very good, only better is really going for a quad core processor but not many of them in the laptops.

Core 2 Duo refers to a family of processors which have been updated/improved, i believe the best you'll find would be the T9000 series of processors, but for your requirements it'd probably be the least cost effective for your usage. Pretty much any core 2 duo processor would suffice.
