have to say does anyone else thing rte's coverage has been fantastic on the athletics and all events really. even the website has been great. think coughlan, kiernan, sonia have been great and bill and peter collins have been great.thought all the boxers taylor, dunne, curruth dowling were great 2. even tho we are a small country we know our stuff compared to the bbc i cant stand dem blowing their trumpet all the time!!
Also garry o toole knows his stuff and tracy pigott and michael lester were all fantastic really enjoyed it cant wait 4 2012!!!! there seems a great old banter between dem all well done rte!!!!!!:D

What a great positive post. Agree the coverage has been excellent.

Was just thinking today that the Olympics is nearly over and it's another 4 years to go. Hopefully I'll be there in 4 years time. Can't wait.

I couldn't agree more. I timed my holidays to coincide with the Olympics and they've been a joy to watch from start to finish. The punditry on RTE has been excellent - it's a shame it's not an Olympic event because we'd be guaranteed a medal if it was! In saying that, I enjoyed the BBC coverage too, both television and radio on Five Live.
In fairness, I think we would have been doing a bit of trumpet-blowing ourselves if our team had been as successful as the British ( I can't bring myself to say Team GB!). I'm not quite sure what I'll do with myself next week when there's nothing to watch. Any suggestions?! Roll on the marathon tonight - my last fix!

We'd be disqualified for drug taking.

:D Nah, there are extra points awarded for being "tired and emotional" in this event!

enjoyed rte,s coverage immensly , i found michael carruths storys from barcelona which stayed just on the right side of self obsession really humerous , no detail from what happend in 1992 was too small for carruth to mention , i wore red shorts in the final i wanted to wear green ones

I missed out on that but always remebered RTE coverage to be great.

This is the upside of not being a competitive nation, more time to cover a good balance of events.
Damn coverage over here is as you would expect, totally ozzycentric and lacks any balance outside of the big events and Ozzie involvement.

They even attempted to expand the audience by bringing in a pretty girl face of TV type woman to anchor a panel. Her lack of any sporting knowledge drew huge criticism and the whole concept was dropped in a few days.

and adds....daman adds every where !!

I like the RTE coverage. I think Jerry Kiernan is a good analyst. I know Jerry and Eamonn i think they do a good job, but are probably a bit to toward the middle and long distance stuff, but they cant help that.
My only gripe with the Rte coverage is Tony O'Donoghoue. Not the gut who is soccer corresponendt, but he commenate's along with Geroge Hamiliton.
Alister Cragg's comment's earlier in the week about people not putting it back into the sport, I would say would be more based at O'Donoghoue then at Kiernan or Coughlan. Jerry coaches a good lot of lads and Eamonn is very involved in MSB. Donoghoue, lives about 2 miles from me and has zero interest in irish athletics. i actually am not joking about that.
When Cragg dropped out, O'Donoghoue plainly said...Cragg gives up!
During the Marathon last night, the camera went onto the Russan guy who won the Dublin marathon(sorry cant think of his name). George pointed out he was twice winner of Dublin and followed it up with....Its good to have some local knowledge! bit of a dig me thinks!! :)

George is a good athletic's commenator I think, he does make good calls in sprints.

    thats my two cents!

I noticed that when Cragg dropped out. It was weird. Just as if "Oh well, Craggs out". As if it wasn't too much of a shock to him.
The Russian guy was Sokolov, and agree George commentates on alot of sport and he seems to do his homework each time.

    What a great positive post.

Yeah, credit where it's due. I give out about RTE a lot but they did us proud over the two weeks. I'm gonna miss the hockey guy. And Marty's dispatches...
