Do I refund shipping or not?

    Hi,
I sold a laptop on ebay recently advertised as usb ports not working. Some guy bought it because he was going to use a pc card (pcmcia) to get usb ports through. Turned out that the pc card slot doesn't work either so I agreed to refund.

Do I have to refund cost to ship to him?
Do I have to pay for him to send it back?

    Thanks.

I dont think you have to refund either..
But I would suggest you do what you think you would like done to yourself if the situation was reversed !

Did you say the laptop was working except for the USB ports?

If you did, I think he would win a claim through paypal. If claimed through paypal, the buyer needs to return the laptop to you at his cost and you would refund the amount he paid you.

Yeah I made it clear that the usb ports were not working and he knew that. I hadn't tested the pc card slot though so there was no mention of it at all. I know it's right to refund him but just wasn't sure about the shipping.

This is really a question of self preservation as well as doing what's right. If you mess your buyer about he can damage you by leaving negative feedback and under eBay's 'wonderful' new system you as the seller cannot leave him negative feedback. As an eBay seller you have got to remember the old saying - the customer is always right! :):)

I'd imagine that you're not legally obligated to refund the shipping charges but as mentioned it might cost you in the feedback department. :)

You are liable for everything- item not as described.
I'd try to negotiate a partial refund with the buyer.
Otherwise you have to refund him the item and pay cost of return.

The OP does not have to pay the cost of return. If the buyer claims through paypal, the buyer has to fund the cost of returning the item. The seller then refunds the original cost of the item (including the original P&P charge).

Is there any advantage getting him to claim through paypal as opposed to just sending me the money direct - via paypal.

I would ask him to send the item back to you (at his cost). When you have it back, process a refund through paypal thereby ensuring that your original paypal fees are re-imbursed by paypal. If you just send the money, the buyer will have to pay fees on the amount and you will not get your original fees back.

Only get him to do a claim if he is insisting on a refund of the return postage as he will learn that paypal do not even insist on this.

Aaaaah ok. So I can get the paypal fees back. What about ebay fees?

Ebay fees are not so easy as you are relying on the goodwill of the buyer to mutually cancel the deal. He is less likely to do that if he has to pay for the item to be returned to you.

But there is a button to cancel deal on his control panel? If so do you know what that is called?

You will have to raise an 'Unpaid Item' dispute with ebay

    http://pages.ebay.ie/help/tp/unpaid-item-process.html

    The key here is to make sure the buyer agrees with the following;
The seller and buyer wish to mutually withdraw from the transaction.

Using the Dispute Console, the seller reports that a mutual agreement has been reached that the buyer will not to complete the transaction.

eBay then emails the buyer for confirmation.

If the buyer confirms this mutual agreement, the buyer will not receive an Unpaid Item strike and the seller will receive a Final Value Fee credit.

If the buyer disagrees with the seller's statement on mutual agreement, the buyer will not receive an Unpaid Item strike and the seller will not receive a Final Value Fee credit. The dispute will be closed immediately after the buyer responds and the seller will not be eligible to re-file an Unpaid Item dispute for that transaction.

If the buyer fails to respond, the seller can still close the dispute to receive a Final Value Fee credit, and the buyer will not receive an Unpaid Item strike.

    Hi,
I've just got the paypal refund request now from the guy. He only send me the request for the price of the laptop and not the delivery to him.

I'm quite surprised he hasn't asked for the shipping money. Should I just refund him this or should I say I will refund shipping aswell?

He said he doesn't expect me to stand the postage for it!
