As much as i hate Cruise this role if the funniest you'll ever see him in and as for the dancing scenes, absolute classic.

Hmmmm, thats spoiler-tastic. I dont think its even out yet here is it? (though I have seen it in the, er, States)

Any review I've seen mentions Tom Cruise is in this movie..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

He is apparently fantastic in it.. still bat-sh*t crazy though!

The dancing scene was leaked a few weeks before the films release.. was pulled by Warner Bros on most sites soon after though.

its not out over here yet! really looking forward to this though heard cruise steals the show.

really looking forward to this though heard cruise steals the show.

Robert Downey Jr doesnt just steal the show, he takes out a Magnum 45 and runs away with it screaming into the sunset :D

If there was an Oscar for Best Actor In A Comedy Film then Downey Jr would have it in the bag. He saves what was, for me, a very overhyped film.

I've edited the title of this thread so as not to give anything away. Oclugg, in future, please be conscious of spoilers when talking about a film that most people here won't have seen.

Just finished watching it there, thought it was brilliant!

Tom Cruise is funny as hell in it, all the cameos had me laughing, great flick.

Should have focused more on the movie making aspect rather than the actual war parts.

One of the funniest parts was
Jack black tied to a tree offering a blow job if someone would let him go
"I'll cup the balls ,stroke the shaft.........

I watched it earlier too and although it's not the non-stop laugh riot that the trailers will suggest, it is very good.

Personal favourite moment was the beginning, and Tom Cruise's response to the terrorists when they demand $50m off him.:pac: Downey was awesome too, it's quite refreshing to see an actor not too worried about what the extreme PC brigade will say.:D

Had the misfortune to see this tonight.

Lasted about 45minutes before I left, mind numbingly boring and all kinds of awful.

I loved it. It opens superbly with
the fake trailers, "Satan's Alley" undoubtedly being the highlight ("father, I've been a very bad boy")

Cruise is excellent as the OP said, but for me, this is Robert Downey Jr's show. Staying in character as Sgt. Osiris even after he realises they're not in a movie anymore, he has some brilliant lines.
one of the highlights being his conversation with Tugg Speedman: "Everyone knows you don't go full retard!"

Ben Stiller is great as well as the naive action star who refuses to believe that they're no longer on set
"I think I know a prop head when I see one"
. His portrayals of 'Simple Jack' are tear-inducing as well as my personal favourite scene
when he accidentally kills the panda
. Brandon T. Jackson has some great moments with Robert Downey Jr as he becomes disallusioned with his portrayals of a black guy. Danny McBride is also worth a mention as the trigger-happy fireworks nut.
I wasn't as fond of Jack Black's character to be honest, although he did deliver a great moment
when he was tied to the tree, offering to "stroke the shaft" of Jackson's character if he let him loose
    .

Definitely one to see again for me.

Was quite disappointed with this. It looked promising from the trailers and previews but there wasn't that many funny moments in it. I didn't find Tom Cruise funny but I did think Robert Downey Jr. was brilliant.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,944 ✭✭✭✭4zn76tysfajdxp

Hey, why would Ben Stiller's character
win an Oscar in the end if the movie he was in was a documentary?
That bit really pissed me off...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

Quite disappointed with this. The vast majority of the funny moments are in the trailer. It has a great cast, some fantastic cameos & a good premise...but theres just too many jokes that fall flat on their face. There is also long stretches without a laugh. Jack Blacks character was awful, really bad. I barely laughed at him once during the whole film.
The leader of the rebels, who happened to be a kid, really annoyed me also.
I also felt a couple of good actors were wasted in the movie and weren't given many good lines.

Having said that, when its funny, its very very funny. Robert Downey is great, as is Tom Cruise. The fake trailers at the start were brilliant, apart from Jack Blacks one which was cringeable. I also thought the film looked great. It was very well shot and seemed to have a high budget for a comedy. Its definitely worth seeing, but it doesnt live up the promise that it showed in the trailers.

If I was being generous Id give it 3 out of 5.

I thought Downey Jr. was very poor. Didn't like the character at all and he wasn't funny.

thought they tried to squeeze a bit too much out of him playing a black guy joke.

ben stiller was okay bit too much like zoolander though

didn't actually know tom cruise was in the film until i saw the film, very surprising, interesting and funny role for him.

would have liked to see more of steve coogan

okay film, could have been a bit better

The worst film I have ever seen, ever.

I love a good comedy and I would usually find a laugh out loud moment somewhere in a good comedy.

The story was crap, even though it was meant to be, I understand the irony in the storyline, but it was crap.

The only person I found funny in it was Tom Cruise, which was surprising.

It just wasn't good, it had no funny moments, I've seen about 10 comedy's of Stillers that all inSTILL the same comedy type humour. It was boring, same tired old jokes.

I appreciate that some people found it funny, but I saw most of the funny bits in trailers I saw for the movie, which were about 30 seconds long. I don't usually watch trailers, but every now and then I do watch a trailer by chance.

I don't usually read reviews on the movies before I go see them, and I didn't for this one, it was marked as a comedy and I went to it expecting a comedy without any pre-conceived notion of the film other than it being a comedy.

A serious let down and disappointment and frankly a waste of money. Usually I leave the cinema after a good film, talking about it, saying it was good. It actually took me a few minutes to calm down, I walked from screen 2 of VUE in liffey valley to the car park before I said anything.

Robert Downey Junior was good in it, it wasn't funny, the character wasn't good, his lines weren't funny, but he played the role well, and I wouldn't expect any less from such a fine actor.

Tom Cruise, again, was superb in it and surprisingly funny.

The rest was just muck and unadulterated crap. Comedy stylings suited to 10 - 15 year olds who haven't seen many good comedies in their short lives.

There were times in the cinema where I became detached to the story, I just drifted off. That alone is enough to give a null rating, but a few comedic performances from Cruise and ...

    I give it a mere 2/10

    Just was not good.

The worst ever? I find this very hard to fathom.

Too many things to disagree with on this post, which imo lacks any credibility due to its ignorance.

I really enjoyed it. And people saying there are too long a spell between jokes at times are obviously missing to very subtle moments of comedy.

RBJ's lines were very funny, again subtle at times.

    Great movie.

I wasn't trying to persuade anyone, it's just my view and opinion.

It wasn't funny though. The cinema was packed when I saw it on Saturday night. There was only a few empty seats.

There was only a titter every now and again, nobody really laughed out loud.

I've seen comedy moments like in the film in dozens of other films, all delivered better with better lines.

If you want to find my post credible or not, that's up to you. But to be honest, a whole cinema, not laughing, for a comedy doesn't hold much merit.

    Very poor.

    Horses for courses i suppose.

I saw this on the weekend to, and thought it was one of the funniest films i've seen a years. RDJ was class, best comedy acting in years imo. Tom Cruise was a complete suprise, it was great to see him play that type of character.

Suppose its a bit like anchorman...i would rate as one of the funniest movies of all time. But some people dont get it. Bit like the office and things like that.

Nothing like the Office or Anchorman in any way.

RDJ wasn't THAT funny, a few shocking lines that were a bit funny, but nothing wonderful or bordering on great comedy.

I guess it is horses for courses, I wouldn't recommend it.

Then again I was knackered tired when I went to see it, and I guess all the other people in the packed cinema were knackered tired too.

I wasnt so much comparing it to anchorman or the office, more just saying that the different styles of comedy work for some people and not for others.
I think RDJ was class :) he pinned down the stereotypical black man spot on i think.
The cinema i was in was prob 50/50 on the laughs side. I had one fella beside me in tears the whole time...hit and miss i suppose.

    Next up...Step brothers :D

I was all set to debate the issue of RDJ's character and then I spotted that at the end of your post.

It seems we have polar opposites of what constitutes 'comedy' as imo 'Tropic Thunder' and Will Farrell are more rolleyes and tumbleweed than anything else.

Out of curiousity what kind of comedies would you consider really funny?.
I would put anchorman and the life of brian as my 2 favourite comedies ever. But then i never really liked a lot of monty python stuff...some of it is good but a lot i thought was just...well, not funny.

I would like to hear your views on RDJ's character...i just hope it doesnt start some sort of racism debate, because imo i dont think there is a case for that here...and i would hate to see another film tarnished by overly PC heads...(not directed at you by the way...i just mean in general)

Life of Brian is fantastic, no debating that.

Anchorman however is the greatest crock of overrated crap I've ever seen. Will Ferrell just isn't funny (except for Old Skool and Night at the Roxbury). I find myself cringing at his jokes. He's just not for me, and certainly doesn't deserve the sort of cult status that has been bestowed on him.

As for my own personal choices, I do like humour when it's not overdone. Characters like Van Wilder and Stifler were laugh out loud funny in an immature way. Even films like Zoolander were brilliant, but once Wilson and Stiller kept doing the same thing over and over again it became boring, just like Ferrell.

Irish comedy is of course great because you can relate to it, i.e. Intermission.

Lol no it doesn't have anything to do with race. I laugh at ethnics jokes with the best of them.

I just thought it was trying too hard. The whole concept was frankly ridiculous and I thought his character was completely upstaged by the actual black guy in the movie who was far funnier. I expected better.

Yeah I get ya, I thought the idea of the RDJ character was very good and he played it himself very very well, exceptionally in fact. I do agree with you though that there were probably a few too many scenes based around the "White Guy paint Black" joke.

With a bit more editing I don't think the jokes would have gotten as stale.

I have to be honest though, I did basically wet myself laughing for most of the big jokes in this. There were a good few were nobody else in the audience laughed too, I think a lot of the audience at the cinema these days are a bit thick and jokes need to be rammed in their faces for them to laugh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 303 ✭✭Discostuy

I think the whole thing with RDJ's character is though, that he is trying to hard in the movie, playing a Daniel Day Lewis type person, who gets ridiculously (sp) into his role. Thats the impression i got from it anyway.

What i liked about this movie and i think anchorman was similar, is that the characters arent trying to be funny. The only way i can explain it in my head is, its like watching the people who audition for x-factor and the likes....ya know the real embarassing people
They aren't doing it for laughs. They honestly believe they have a talent, but to everyone else its comical, because they cleary dont. If you get me :D

Did anyone notice any scenes that were back to front? I was at a preview in Cineworld a week or two ago, and the scene with Tom Cruise's first dance while Matthew Mcconaughey was in the office with him happened before Matthew had even come into the office. His entrance came a bit later. How could this have happened at the cinema? What type of format does the movie come in these days-reel, disc?

As far as my opinion on the film: Started off good with the trailers, but as with most spoof films, became very long and drawn out with fewer laughs.
and also STEVE COOGAN SHOULD BE SHOT! Don't agree to do a film if you're not going to bother trying to make it good.

I was very disappointed with this as well - it really didn't live up to the trailers for me.
    kraggy wrote:

I think it's more do to with the fact that he did the part, rather than the character itself. He really doesn't come across as the type to take the piss often.

Apart from Cruise's character, I don't think the film was as self-deprecating as it could have been. Stiller tends to do very well when he does the "cringe scenes", but it just didn't really happen.

The only positives is that for once they managed to avoid having Owen/Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn make a pointless cameo, and that it didn't have the same smugness that the Oceans 11/12/13/2000 films have (I make the comparison because the latter films just seem to be about Pitt/Clooney have a laugh on set).

Edit - I have to say, I did find the "simple jack" part very funny.

I think this sums it up really, a lot of you were just expecting too much. I saw this with 2 friends and none of us had any idea what it was about or who was in it and we all really liked it. Hell I'd decided to buy the DVD by about the half-way mark :pac:

It makes me wonder if the marketing campaigns are really the worst enemy of some movies as they're built up way too much. There are a lot of movies which were really hyped up that I thought were crap but had I gone in knowing nothing I might have liked.

It's not a case of it not being as brilliant as I was hoping for, it simply wasn't much good at all. I was just hoping for an enjoyable Ben Stiller film, and I was bored for large chunks of the film.

This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life, and I've found the good in alot of crappy movies.

The only funny element of this movie was RDJ, and the Platoon pisstake at the start.
The rest of the movie, especially Jack Black and Tom Cruise, was a torture to sit through.

Alot of good talent was wasted in this movie and I found myself cringing more than I laughed.
