In certain sports like boxing and judo both losing semi-finalists get a bronze medal each.

    says who????

if you lose the semi final in judo you fight the winner of the repechage actually..there is two bronzes, but if you lose your semi final you DO NOT get a bronze, bronze medal have to be fought for and won in judo..

Bronze medal is fought for in boxing, its fought for at quarter final stage.

Boxing is a fight sport and to ask the fighter who is out of the olympics to fight again is stupid..he could be hurt or mentally fecked too..

paddy barnes seems to think the same, he did not look or sound to pleased after his loss in the semi final, didn't see lossing a semi final as an achivemnt or cause for celebration, jimmy mcgee seemed lost for words at his reaction in his inteview

still, well done to the irish boxers for getting so far, you did a lot better than most of the other athletes we sent out

judo have quarter finals too paul....im not dissin boxing im simply stating that that guy pressumed the losing semi finalists in judo are not guaranteed a medal, anybody who lost to the two finalists go into repecahge and get another chance at a medal, they have lost too but fight again, the winner of the repechage fights the losing semi finalist for the bronze.

Ah right, didn't realise that. I've seen two bronzes being awarded in judo and assumed it was the same as boxing.

Yeah its the same thing though, both are earned.
1 is not more valuable than the othr.

again i didnt say they werent more valuable than the other, just getting to the olympics is earned, i just think the loser of the semi final should have to fight for there bronze like judo.

paddy barnes was slaughtered , by an awesome fighter , cant understand why barnes would be displeased , not like he was ever in with an asses roar of a win

How is that different to a fouth place play-off in any sport? You are not out until after your last fight/match.

You could be hurt or mentally fecked after winning your quarter final just as much as you could be from losing your semi.

It wasn't so much the loss that displeased him, as he admitted that his opponent was the deserved winner, rather his pride was hurt due to him not registering a single point. He felt particulary aggrieved about the judges not giving him any points for a couple of punches he landed in round 1.

You usually don't have the chance of suffering serious head trauma twice in two days in other sports.

The only time I watch boxing is in the Olympics but I have to say even I thought Paddy Barnes was hard done by... not in terms of being well beaten but not to have been awarded some of the punches he landed did seem unfair. Good result for him tho and I'm sure in time he'll appreciate it.

Come on Kenny Egan tho... will he take the gold?

Why would anyone wactually want a beaten semi finalist in boxing to go through another fight? Its like you want someone to get injured.

All sports have their own rules and regulations, so leave them to get on with it. BTW Taekwondo has a similar system as Judo to give out their two bronze

But whats the difference between say egan fighting in the final tomorrow or a third place fight?

Again, they are boxers. They spend a career boxing. Who is saying they want someone to get injured.

As above, whats the difference between winning and going on to fight a final or losing and going on to a third place fight? How is someone more likely to get hurt in a third place fight. Plus I feel I have to point it out again, they are boxers, it's what they do.

Again, tell it to the WHO, it was their decision. Jealous much?

Is that aimed at me? What have I to be jealous about. The discussion was about reasons why there isnt a 3rd place fight. Theres no real reason why not to have one.

The WHO? as in the world health association? Whats it got to do with them?

When you lose you tend to be hit more often than when you win.

*edit*:- to clarify, what i mean by this is, if you've lost your semi-final, in some cases you may have taken a bit of a beating. It is not the best thing to have to get into the ring for another fight the next day if you've shipped a few heavy shots in your losing fight. I know you can be involved in a war and still win, but I think its best that they err on the side of caution when they can instead of expecting a guy to take more punishment after a loss than is necessary.

they promote health and safety and set guidelines down for boxing, they changed the rounds from 3*3 to 5*2 and then 4*2. They say it AIBA applies it cos we like our sport continuing. Does this answer your question?

Hardly makes that much of a difference in the short fight. The difference between a win or a loss could be 1 punch.

If the organisers wanted a 3rd place fight they could have one, theres nothign stoppign them.

yes there is. But you obviously know better so I'll leave it there.

You still didnt clarify your other jibberish about me being jealous of somehting.

Where did I say I know better? I put forward an opinion and theres nothing solid to counter it. Theres lots of if's or maybes, but no concrete reson not to only give 1 Bronze out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

again the WHO gave a recommenation that it be dropped and the AIBA did as there were told. It's like a court recommendation you don't have much choice. And you r refusal to accept this and insist there must be one medal leads me to think your envious of their two bronze medals.

That's true, it may be. Or the margin of victory could be 15 or 16 points where the loser took numerous heavy shots (some of which may not even have gone down as scoring shots). When there is a possibility that this can happen, i think its wise not to expect someone who may not be in the correct physical or mental state to compete in a fightsport environment so soon after a crushing loss to take part in a play-off.

And it could be way more punches too! could be a stoppage or ko.
also-1 scoring punch does not mean he was only hit once more, do you think a 5-5 fight means they only got hit 5 each? no way, you clearly never boxed or would not be talking so much jibberish!

when there out of the running for gold it would be mentally very hard also to compete for bronze, the system in place now is the best and the medals are earned, its a knock out competition at the end of the day.

in the fa cup teams dont play to see who came 3rd and 4th!

Again, where did I insist there should be one medal? all my posts are right here in the thread. All I said was there was no real reson not to. I really dont see my post where I insist that the IOC listen to me and only offer 1 Bronze.

    !

Where did I say a 5-5 fight means each fighter only got hit 5 times? But equally a 15-0 fight doesnt mean the winner never got hit.All I said was that by losing its possible you could only have taken 1 punch more.(or a lot less none scoring punches)

stekelly, You dont understand boxing and what getting a beating is like, losing in the last 4 you could get bashed and by your logic get back in again to take more punishment, just qualifying through europe in boxing in the olympics is an amazing achievement, then to expect someone in a knock out competition to fight again is ridiculus..

Your entitled to your opinion but i for 1 am in total disagreement with you, expecting 2 beaen men to fight off for 1 medal when they already lost, it would not be a knock out comp then.

You where refering to the punishment taken, saying the difference could be 1 punch, as i said, 1 scoring punch but could of been a beating-also whats to say the fighter was not pummelled and lost by 10-15 official punches, what would you suggest then?

The no fight for the Bronze came in for a few reasons,Yes as mentioned already on this thread .The fairness of making two defeated fighters return to the ring to fight again was deemed just unfair, both physically and mentally.
And Health and Safety Boards and Commitees had something to do with it ,
However one of the main reasons for the change and the bronze fights been dropped was the fact that it was often trying to go against most Nation Boxing Bodies own rules (feel free to correct me, was true in the old days )
If a fighter is STOPPED he could not fight again for 7 DAYS and A CLEAN DOCTORS CERT,
If a fighter was KO he could not fight again for 14-21 DAYS again with A CLEAN DOCTORS CERT,
So not all but a good few of fights became non -events or walkovers. And this and the other reason giving led to them been dropped.
