Upgrading MBP Hard disk under warranty - options?

    Hey!

I'm looking at upgrading my core2duo MBP's hard disk from 120gb to something like 250gb or higher as I need the space and external drives aren't doing the job as efficiently. The laptop is 11months old now and its time to give her an upgrade.

I know replacing the hdd myself will void the warranty but I also have applecare.. does that change anything? Can it void applecare(considering its paid for).

Anyone know how much mactivate charge for doing this and if they allow you to purchase a hdd elsewhere and have them install it?

Is going for a 7200rpm hdd a good choice? Will it heat up the MBP faster and how does it affect the fans?

Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated!

I think that to be 100% certain whether it will void your warranty or not you should definitely just ring the applecare line and ask them.

Also, i think you should reconsider paying somebody to install a HDD for you. From what iv read and been told it seem no more difficult that installing RAM. As far as i know you just unscrew a couple of screws and it slots right out. But i could be wrong.

Either way, your MBP deserves 250GB

Well I've installed one in my brothers macbook and that was a very easy job, however the MBPs are supposed to be a bit of surgery.

I'm looking at this http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=358193 at the moment. I don't like having to pay someone to do something so simple but for warranty sake I may have to.

yeah, your warranty will be voided unless an Apple certified technician does the upgrade.

Thanks guys. I have ordered a 320Gb 7200rpm WD hard drive for 133eur and fitting by mactivate is 100+vat. A bit much to fit a hdd but my only option.

Yes, it's quite a bit of surgery opening up a MBP. I've swapped out drives in PowerBooks and iBooks and the PB's are certainly more fiddly. You may find that the fan will run more often in your machine as the 7200 rpm drive will generate more heat. On a related point is anyone else surprised by the amount of 'sticky tape' Apple use in there!

Does anyone else find it extremely weird that the consumer oriented Macbook has a user-replaceable HDD but the "pro" oriented MacBook Pro does not? Yeah, I know it would probably mess with the MBP's overall styling, but you'd think that "pro" users would be more inclined to upgrade their internal HDD down the line...
