Work Placement in Accounting, Finance or Banking

I'm looking for a 8-9 month work placement as part of my degree in UL. I am doing a BBS in Accounting and Finance with Entrepreneurship. In January we have to take co-op (co-operative education), which is paid work placement in a business/enterprise relevant to the course. So far I can't really find anything.

So, does anyone have any ideas of companies I could ring up and ask?

i'd try the big banks and the big 4 a/c firms. The banks aren't really hiring at the moment but from what I can see the a/c firms are holding fairly steady with their recruitment at the moment. After that go to a few of the banking/finance recruitment firms and see what they have to say.

Have you considered the funds sector...is growing well in ireland

Thanks, thats good advice. Never looking into the funds industry. Who are the big player's in that sector, Goodbody's & AIG and so forth?

No goodbody is a stockbroker and AIG an insurance company. Best place to look is financejobs.ie and there is a section for funds (as well as all other area's in finance)

Good look its a tough mkt at the moment but if you play your cards well there are still opportunities out there

I know Deloitte and PWC have dedicated Co-op programmes, and you should talk to your college career office about getting a place on one of those, I'm sure E&Y and KPMG have similar programmes, devised for UL and UCC.

i took a few of grads before on these work placements, paid them well below market rate aswell. usually do its 11/12 months. Your best bet is not to go with the ul list and find your own placement, maybe try state street or ifs if your looking for fund accountancy. However your timeline might not fit as most companies will look to take you for a min of 11/12 months so to flatten out the training cost and claim some tax incentives.
