New 160GB PS3 and Improved PSP Announced

Hmnnn very 'meh' announcements really. The PS3 is easily upgradable anyway in regards to its drive. The mic does open the door for possible DS type games but if that had of appealed to me I'd have bought a DS. I'm not too bothered by the screen announcement. While the PSP screen does suffer from ghosting it's not enough to make me go out and buy a new one just for an improved screen.

Seems almost pointless having the 80GB out this week then? If I can get a game I want with the 80gb for the 400e I will buy that, otherwise I may wait (again)

I want a cheape PSP, not a more expensive one!

EDIT: Oh it is for America, not European date announced there.

    Makes sense now.

The screen on the PSP is terrible for glaring. Sony aren't really doing the PSP any favours, it's a great machine but more worthwhile upgrades need to be done. Sony should release some decent firmware upgrade, like adding Flash playback. Anyone hear or know about any 40GB PS3 clearout deals?

This isn't for America, It's a German games convention. The 80gb is still out here on Friday for €400.

I was talking about the 160gb. 80GB is old news.

There's also a free music and video service coming to the PS3 although I'd still prefer a video download service.

The PSP comes with a 4GB memory stick so it's quite a good deal.

Complain to Adobe if you want improved Flash playback. They code and distribute Flash and they highest version Sony, Apple, MS can license is verion 7 which both PSP & PS3 have.

The 160gb is out in Europe October 31st, why would the pricing be in Euro if it was US only?

God I hate smilies. Makes people look like ****holes.

Anyway http://www.ps3fanboy.com/ I only see dollar pricings.

The headline is: "160GB model also announced for America: $499, November release"

    ALSO Announced. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

AFTER it's been announced for Europe in this link I already posted in the first post. http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/08/20/80gb-goes-on-sale-in-europe-this-friday-160gb-ps3-available-10/

Okay-still despise your smilies tho. Make you look childish!

The link won't work properly for me.

Hmm so back to the question of whether or not to wait!

That mean 80gb will only be around for a month?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

It's gonna be €449, so about €470 here. 80GB more space and a game worth €70 for about €50 more. Seems like a better deal.

Well the DCL only if you rate it to begin with. Uncharted is a platinum now anyway. And you can get hard drives relatively cheap. Duno if I can wait another 2 monthes anyway.

Why are Sony so obsessed with increasing the PS3 hard drive size and making announcements as if it was a huge leap forward? It's not!

I couldn't care less how big the HD inside a PS3 is. Assuming I would use it as a media server these announcements aren't going to tempt me to get one until they get into the 500Gb+ territory.

I'd prefer if they concentrated their efforts on reducing the physical size and power consumption of that beast of a thing. Until that happens, it ain't going into my living room.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,728 ✭✭✭✭noodler

How come you are so obsessed with the size and power consumption? I'd be suprised if it could be made much smaller at the moment consdiering it needs HD space, USB slots, the Blu-Ray Player and the cpu etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Of course they can make it smaller! It's almost 2 years since its release (a bit shorter in Europe) - things get easier to make and shrink as the years go by.

I'm not obsessed about the HD space. I just think the announcements Sony make are phony marketing gimmicks to keep the PS3 brand in the media.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,728 ✭✭✭✭noodler

No offence but "of course they can" is a bit general. The ps2 didn't have this much stuff in it, a blu ray player or a hard drive. They can probly skimp on the cpu parts in time but I reckon (and Im no expert so if someone knows more about it then jump in) that it must cost too much at the moment to make smaller ones. Otherwise Im sure they would rather than keeping bring out new PS3s.

Why are you pushed about size and power consumption tho?

it's the same reason ms are it's the simplest part to increase
    to impress stupid people

The current unit is about the size of a small russian tank. If it's going to be gracing a position under my TV, it's just got to be smaller.

If it's going to be a media server in my home, as Sony hope it will be, (being powered on 24x7) then I want it to be very efficient at power utilisation - especially when idle.

Sony will of course bring out a smaller unit in time, my guess is next year. And in a few years we'll be having a good laugh about how monstorous the original PS3 was.

Well add at least Flash 7 support.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,372 ✭✭✭ongarite

Flash 7 is supported on PSP and PS3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

Really? Since when? I haven't being really keeping up to date with PSP news because I very rarely use it.
Edit: I just read on Wiki that the PSP only has Flash 6 support. If it had Flash 7 support, wouldn't Youtube work on it?

I dont mind the size of the PS3 cos at least the power supply is inside it. I much prefer that than having a brick lying around outside it. Plus all you need is a computer cable to plug it in.
