Iqon Laptop not booting

    Hi folks.

A friend of mine has an Iqon laptop, probably about 4 years old, WinXP, and today it has just stopped booting.

It won't even boot into safe mode.

What happens is, no matter which "mode" I select to boot into, it continues to count down, then start the boot process, I get the WinXP logo, then a loud beeping noise, an apology for the inconvenience message, and back to the boot menu.

It says there may be some hardware or software fault, but my friend assures me that nothing has changed.

The only thing she really uses the laptop for is browsing. She has one of them Vodafone 3g connections, and it has worked perfectly up until now.

    Any ideas?

Is the "apology" a Windows dialogue box? i.e. does it actually get into Windows, display the box, then boot her back out?

Could be a 101 different things, I would suspect Windows has become corrupt.

The first thing that springs to mind is a Windows XP repair install. She won't lose any data and as far as I remember, installed programs (such as the 3G software) should be fine.

Also, see if there is any diagnostic option in the BIOS (unlikely, since it's an iqon :))

OK, I have the re-installation disk and I'm doing a fresh install.

Should I do NTFS or FAT?

You might be better try a repair install first, then if that doesn't work, a full fresh install.

    I might have to.

"Please wait while Setup copies files to thenWindows installation folders. This may take several minutes"

But this is the second time it's done this.

When it reboots, should I leave it to go on, and not boot into the cd again?

Won't need to ring you, it's going through the set up now.

    Cheers
