Advice Req: Freesat system for my Spanish retreat?

Hi folks,

The Pirate Sky/BBC MMDS systems in Spain were shut down last week by Spanish Police leaving over 80,000 expats and Irish without english & Irish tv. (potentially big business oportunity for some Sat expert on this forum):D

Anyway i would like to get a Freesat system and a large dish to receive it (approx 1.9m).

I could possibly erect it myself but just wondering how to source a system and have it shipped to my place at Alicante, Costa Blanca, Spain?

There are lots of rumours that the Pirate operators will be back on the air out there but regardless i would like to install my own system even to have as a back up.

Any tips appreciated.

I only mentioned the Pirate operators in Spain but my enquyiry has nothing to do with Pirate operators only in the general above board Freesat Satellite systems that do not require monthly subscriptions

Still, talking about using illegal stuff, then stating your location, to add to that its very easy to find out your IP address which will link you to your ISP , which in turn will have your home address ... uh, run for the hills i tell ya!!!

About your question, it would be cheaper for you to buy in Spain and also if there are any issues and you need to return goods it wont cost you a small fortune in post fees.

and for receiver, the best one is Humax Foxsat HD; you can get it from http://www.argos.co.uk or any other UK supplier, there are lots of them.. Check for the best price.

Well it's been discusse dto death on the Spanish forums as to whether is illegal in Spain or not over there.

Anyway lets not start that discussion here thanks anyway i will source a basic Satellite in Spain and thanks.

That was for freesat receiver which will give you interactive menu and 7 day EPG, otherwise any other FTA satellite receiver will work.
Note: you will not get 7 day EPG , only now and next and no interactive menu... also some of them will not be able to receive ITV HD

hi. i brought a lidls dish and fta box to orihuela costa two weeks ago. i only got shopping channels. music channel on astra 28. i think a bigger dish might do. new to this stuff. any advice would be apreciated

IrishHomer; If you try looking at some sites dedicated to 'Astra 2D' reception you will probably find someone in your locality who will be able to give you detailed info on dish size required, best LNB to get etc.

The box you get wont really matter, but as mentioned previoulsy, a freesat box (HUMAX) will give you a 7 day TV guide (EPG)

Some of the channels are on satellites very weak in Spain. Some places need 2.5m dish and others can't get all the channels at all.

Due to "freznel Zone" the sigal can vary up and down along a street at places on edge of reception.

thanks watty. someone i know in torreveija has english channels on a bigger dish. will check out what box and sat they are on in oct.

I was in Torrevieja last week. Noticed it was shut down alright. They showed the pirate switch room on Spanish TV news. No small-time op. There's big money behind this.

Noticed they're already back on the air and seem to be using that bastardised 10GHz MMDS with the dishes facing down. That'll probably go as well. I'd say you'd need at least a 1.2m dish over there for Astra 2D.

There was a flyer in the house I was in (little neat set top box as well. EPG, the whole works). Install €550 and €19 per month, which included Sky Sports. Definitely wasn't going to last though, given how soccer-mad the Spanish are.

This is the one that was operating where we were. Intersting that they ran Sat + MMDS.
