Also what do you need to get into them? Do you need to be up to a certain level? How much of it is study and how much is practice. I'd like to hear anyones experiences with them

I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for but I think you can do a B Mus. in Cork. I don't have any experience or advice, all I know is my sister was interested in going there :).

    Hi Panopticon, :D

It depends what you're looking for and what level you're at. Also, you need to ask yourself - would you rather more performance or more theory? Would you like to study management or sound as part of the course OR just music performance alone?

Firstly, if you fit the bill (i.e. if you have the right amount of points etc. from your leaving cert./if you qualify on other grounds) for one of the universities, you could look into the music courses in universities such as: UCC, UCD, Maynooth, DCU etc.. You'll find their websites on google for further info.

If you don't think you'd qualify for one of these, maybe you could try one of the colleges of further education, such as Ballyfermot College, Dublin (which has a music management course), Kylemore College which is also in Dublin and has a music performance course. Or, if you're a bit further south, Colaiste Stiofan Naofa in Cork have a Music, Management & Sound course that might appeal to you.:P

**My advice to you would be to do the following:;)
    1) Sum up exactly WHAT you want to achieve from doing a music course (i.e. performance/theory/teaching??)
    2) Location - where would you like to do it, do you want to travel? etc.
    3) Do you want to go to a university? Or a college of further education?

When you know all 3, check out the courses available to you that match what you're looking for. And if at that point, you have 2 or 3 courses and can't decide, I'd ask people on boards (who've done them), to give a rate out of 5 and a review of the courses.;)

Hope this helps a little... :)

    1. I would more than anything else like to study theory. I would like to do some performance but mostly theory. I'm sure they go hand in hand to an extent anyway

    2. I would like to do it somewhere in Ireland ideally

    3. I don't mind where i go as long as i learn what i want to learn which would firstly be music theory

How much of an overlap is there between study and performance?? By the way i am not interested in the sound side of it for now as i have already done some of that. Right now more than anything else i just want to get into how it is all constructed. I play music myself but i want to get really in depth with it as it fascinates me.

Also with performance i assume you need a certain level? I have never done any grades but i have been playing for years. Is there a way around that?? I would love to do performance at some stage in the future too but for now theory is my main goal. Any info to help me out or links to check out would be very much appreciated. Cheers :D

You’ll get some info on the UCD (University College Dublin) course here:
    https://myucd.ucd.ie/programme_info/music.ezc

UCC (University College Cork) have info about their music course & entry level here:
    http://www.ucc.ie/en/CKA20/

Trinity College Dublin music course link:
    http://www.tcd.ie/courses/undergraduate/az/course.php?id=42

**Although, the universities have high entry levels and criteria to meet. It may be hard to get in here unless you fit all their criteria and have some background in music.

Here’s some links to the Colleges of Further Education…

Ballyfermot College, Dublin music course info (very popular course, limited places):
    http://216.240.136.7/bcfe/courseinfo.php?course=34

Kylemore College, Dublin 10. This course also has music theory and performance:
    http://www.kylemorecollege.ie/mtc/mus_perform.html

Colaiste Stiofan Naofa, Cork. This link gives info on their music course:
    http://www.csn.ie/perf/c-p-music.htm

**Just to note, the Colleges of Further Education require you to do an audition to assess your current level of musicianship. I think they will require you to have some musical knowledge.

Might be worthwhile having the basics behind you first, maybe getting a couple of private lessons so you do well on the auditions… just an idea ?
    Best of luck!!
