Maybe try this crowd (i'm not a german teacher)

    German Teachers Association of Ireland:

or find out what the school was using up until now.

or perhaps get in contact with the previous german teacher to see what they were using. I would imagine that classes that are midway through a cycle are not going to go changing books now, so your second, third and sixth years will probably have the same books as last year.

10 different class groups seems like an awful lot to have on your timetable unless the first years only have a couple of classes a week.

To be honest and i don't mean to be blase about it, but head of department probably doesn't mean a whole lot, you will probably be responsible for doing schemes of work for german for each year and subject department plans but you won't be getting anything extra for being department head. you will probably also find there are lots of other teachers who are the only teacher in their subject area. I am the only chemistry/ag science/PLC computer teacher in my school so that makes me head of 3 departments ;)

Get a school subscription to some trashy mag like the German equivalent of 'Hello' or similar.
Alternatively you could order 'Der Spiegel' - maybe give it to the 6th Years.
