First laptop for college

    Budget: Probably about €1k...

Intended use: Nothing too taxing... College stuff, internet, dvds, downloading stuff... would want a decent hard drive/ram but I'm not too bothered with games and all that... two or three max. A DVD-RW would be nice too.

Mobility: As long as it doesn't hugely push up the cost, I would prefer fairly lightweight and I'm not really interested in a big screen.

Warranty: Don't know much about this... What are the standard ones like? Not too interested in paying a lot extra for this unless they're strongly recommended...

Basically not looking for anything too fancy, but also don't want the absolute bargain basement stuff either... I have no real preference for PC or Mac, having heard good and bad things about both, but (just judging by a quick glance at the Apple site) are the Mac specs not way inferior to most of the PC brands, considering their relatively high price?? Is the only catch that they look cool?

The Sony VAIO ones look decent, no? Anyway, recommendations/advice welcome! Thanks.

From my own experience, Mobility is THE most important thing in a College Laptop.

There's nothing worse than trying to carry round a 17" beast.

I'm getting an EEE-PC for college. And using a decent Dell Vostro as a desktop replacement at home.

    Seriously, smaller laptop is essential.

Thanks. Yeah okay I think on second thoughts that's probably right... changing my OP now...

    What make is that EEE-PC?

Asus. And EEE's don't have optical drives [CD/DVD], or Graphics Cards [old games only].

If you want mobility, get a Laptop backpack. Less obvious than a normal laptop bag, more comfortable, and you can carry you 17 inch monster along with you books inreasonable comfort.

If anything, the box will make the majority of the weight so you wont notice the bag.
