What do ye think. I think they look nicer then the 605 and the interface looks much better. I may give up my iPod for this, depending how small it is.

    More info here:

The huge capacities are very tempting. I don't think I could lug around a 7" screen though for 320gb. I'm looking for something to replace my H140 which is bulky enough. I'm not sure if these will be a viable replacement for audio requirements. Been waiting about 4 years for something worth replacing. This line up looks promising, but I'm not sure :(

CNet should have a review of it soon. They're very pricey, €350 for the 60GB version.

Anyone know availablity in europe and prices for the Archos 7? I know the Archos 5 prices are from €350-500 and is released in early September. Though there's no mention of the Archos 7 on their online store (only the Archos 5)

I'm not sure if this is correct:
    Archos 7 - October: 160GB - £359, 320GB - £439

    Archos.com are shipping now AFAIK.

There's a couple of reviews and links up at http://archosfans.com/

I think I'll be getting one of these. Early prices from some resellers in the UK put the 120GB at 340e so that beats the itouch 16GB imo. But we'll see what apple show at their show tomorrow, all could change! :D

They are not in the shops yet, but you can get them much cheaper on the internet from uk stores , a couple of places like dabs, idotech and bt shop are advertising the 250gb for around £290 which is approx €360
the 250gb is going to be approx €500 in the shops here, pixmania have the 250gb in stock at €460 plus delivery, peats are likely to be one of the first shops to have them here but as I said I think they will be €100-€140 dearer than the uk, I think a trip north of the border might be on the cards soon.

Elara are offering the Archos 7 for €427 (160gb) and €521 (320gb). About €30 and €35 cheaper than pixmania.

Anyone got one of these yet? The reviews make it look great but I'm wary of the fact you cant swap out the battery. Batteries just don't last long enough for me so I’d like the option to carry a spare but I'd be interested in hearing how it works out in the real world.

The only review I read said the firmware was buggy as hell, what reviews have you read on it? i'd like to get more input myself

Read a few reviews looks like could be a very nice device, thing that is apparent though is that the plug-ins are not made yet therefore it may be a bit too soon to be buying.

As linked above http://archosfans.com/ have some good stuff on it including video reviews. Think they have some links to other places too.

    Bricks and mortar or online???

Either will do but would have a preference to bricks

Elara are showing a few of the 120gb in stock, though I'm not really sure if they have them, on the main page it says less than 5 in stock 1-2 days delivery but if you check the realtime delivery option it says 0 in stock???
    http://www.elara.ie/products/results.asp?srch=archos&anyallexact=all&manu=&productcode=&mancode=&searchBtn=Search

Also pixmania and Archos itself have them, but they are not in the shops in Ireland yet, I spoke to a guy in Beaumex who distribute them in Ireland and he tells me that the initial shipment which was due around now has been delayed and he is not sure when they will be in.

The word around is that the first shipment was extremely buggy and that Archos was working on a firmware upgrade before they shipped anymore, I'm hoping to get one of these myself but I think I'll wait a while until they sort out the initial problems.

Fairly glowing review on The Register http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/10/15/review_media_player_archos_5/
The Archos 5 replaces the Cowon A3 as Register Hardware's favourite mobile video device. The King is dead, long live the King!

Has anyone heard when the 5g is expected? The 5 sounds great but having the ability to go online anywhere anytime is very tempting...

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,423 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

The 5g is France only for the time being AFAIK.

I kind of want the Archos 5, but i've been reading about archos placing their ads on screen, not only do I not like the idea of that, I refuse to support it by buying one...if I can get my hands on a review until then all well and good, but I won't pay money until those ads are gone :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

Well thats a bollox if its france only for the 5g :(

Not sure what you mean about the ads on screen though

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,423 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

They have little blurbs advertsing their various plugins and accessories on the archos 5's homescreen.

Does anyone know for sure what the battery life is? I've read on that it's 12hrs for audio...but i've also read that it's 22hrs...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

Well I've heard they have things in the menu that only work if you have the appropiate plugin or otherwise say buy it but I wouldnt really call them ads. I mean it'd be one thing if they popped that crap up at random times but they're only coming up if you try to use a feature you havent paid for.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,423 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

I'm just going by this: http://www.pocketables.net/2008/10/first-impressio.html

"There's an appalling amount of self-promoting ads for Archos accessories permanently installed on the"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

Well I haven't actually seen one myself but my understanding from other reviews is that you basically have permanent (ie unchangeable/unhideable) menu items for things like tv recording etc that require extra plugins and/or hardware. Trying to access these options without the necessary hardware/software brings up a message encouraging you to buy the stuff. Sure its annoying that you cant hide it but its not something that would put me off buying the thing.
