I am working as an Special Needs Assistant in a school. I was told that I could claim as allowance for Flat Rate Expenses. Teachers are allowed to claim this. I rang the revenue comm. and they told me that I was allowed and gave me an allowance. I have since heard from other SNA's that they have been told thet are not entitled to this allowance.

What do I do? Leave it as it is and take the money? Or ring them back and see? It seem to be that depending on who answers the phone will depend on wether you get the allowance or not...........

    Any help appreciated.:(

Flatrate expenses allowance for fulltime secondary school teachers is EUR518 (there are additional allowances depending on the subjects you teach and whether or not you do PE etc). Link to it on Revenue's website here.

Its in the form of a tax credit (you can back claim by requesting a balancing statement).

I seem to be falling into a little bit of a gap when it comes to claiming flat rate expenses. I have heard that someone in the leisure industry can claim under the PE teacher flat rate expense heading. Do you know if there is any truth to this?

If a person is engaged full-time in teaching Physical Education, there is a flatrate expense of EUR518 (@2010 levels) which can be claimed against taxable income.

If the teacher teaches subjects in addition to PE- they are entitled to a reduced allowance of EUR126 per annum (once again @ 2010 levels).

This allowance is not available in the leisure industry- other than solely in a teaching capacity, which if employed other than a teacher, must be proven to the Revenue Commissioners.
