    Hi guys,

Anyone know of an easy way to show who's printing to a network printer?
Someone is printing to the bosses printer and he has no idea who it is?

Print server is Win2003 Std and we use all HP printers
Before I check, I assume the event logs are prob the best place to start?

yes your if the printer is connected directly to your boss's computer via usb he can check the printer queue and see the username of the person printing and sack him/her lol

Could also wait and see who comes to pick up the print outs/check the print outs for information.

Thing is no one is comming to collect. Printer is in his office.
    It's his printer.

Checked the event logs on print server....he's the only one printing to it.
Someone/something is printing to the printer directly. (to it's IP)

Needs further investigation. May have to capture network traffic

    Thanks

If its a HP priner use the webjet admin to check the print logs. Simple as.

You could just change the permissions to that printer to stop the problem

    Cheers
Where in webjet would I find that? Had a brief look there this morning and couldn't spot it.

I believe this has already been tried. Would still like to know where the pages are coming from though. Thanks

Is whoever is printing to the managers printer not coming to collect their printing or are they just trying to wind him up?

Do you have a wireless connection? Possible somebody has hacked into the network??

I have a copy of the output here. Doesn't look familiar although I think I know the department where it's coming from. No name on the output.

It's a Laserjet 4050....no wireless on this one.
If someone is doing this for a joke they must not want their job that much. It's one of the CEO's printers.

I've a feeling either a unix box or an AS400 box is configured to print to this printer via it's IP.

    The search continues....

Set exclusive permissions on the printer to the only person allowed to print to it.. that should stop it

Have you got Access Control List facility on your routers? This is the way to make sure you have control of what goes where.

Clearly the person printing is unaware that they are doing so.

goto the printer and turn on separator pages (the page that tells you who's print is who's) it will print out an extra page everytime a print goes to it telling you who sent the print to it
