To put yourself in with the best possible chance, you should get a Leaving Cert. Many employers are not taking people with just the Junior Cert. nowadays.

If the traditional Leaving Cert. doesn't suit your learning style, you could find a school that offers LCA and if you're lucky they will have a vocational specialism where you can get work experience in one of your chosen trades - that's the sort of thing leads to apprenticeships.

Yes the LCA or the LC is really the only way to go. With the state of the construction sector you should really be looking to finish your leaving cert to give you as many options as possible.

thats the problem i owe money to the credit union so i wont be going back to school anytime soon and not the kind you could afford to pay off on a part time job so i need to get an apprenticeship and work weekends if you understand what i mean

The credit union issue is a separate one. To give yourself the best chance of an apprenticeship you'll need a Leaving.

The credit union will wait a couple of years to get their money if you explain to them what you are doing. Get a part-time job while doing your Leaving and pay them a small amount every month. You are a long term investment for the credit union and your education is the long-term investment for you.

an apprenticeship would pay you less than some part time jobs.

You could also choose dog easy courses in school at a low level and should be able to do a part-time job (earning as much as apprentice) and get LC.

Also you could sell stuff you own to help lower debt, car? bike?

Listen, ya may have to work like a dog for a few years to get back on track, but it should be worth it in long run...

Dont apprenticeships pay really badly for the first few years while you are learning the trade.

Agency's generally charge the people who hire you. They do not charge you I believe. You wont make near 400-450 doing an apprentiship. If I were you I would try and get a job as a gardener in your local hospital or care home, I was getting paid about that amount of money to work during the summers when I was in uni.

Problem is most of the job is cutting grass and that doesnt grow all year round.

May I ask what kind of debt it is as if you own any assets I would sell them off and pay off the debt. Education is the best way to go if you can in any way manage to pay for it.

FAS are also the best place for you to contact about jobs I would say. They might give good training too.

i wouldn't expect to make 400-450 a week id expect to make about 250 off of the apprenticeship and another 150-200 working weekends also my car decks etc are up for sale already so im kinda in a predicament if you get what i mean

    Have you spoken to Fas?
If not have a look at www.fas.ie and maybe give them a call too?

to be honest man its not worth it now. iv being doin an apprenticeship for the last year and a bit and its startin to get scarce out there. it might be worth ur while getting one that doesnt revolve around the construction industry though....the likes of domestic companies, matienance ect... they dont seem to be taking as hard a hit as the industrial side of things. most youd make in 1st year is 240 but it shoots up in your second year!

    +1

JC is all you need for apprentiship and think if you could do a basic intro course in panel beating/mechanic/whatever with FAS it'll show employers you have interest/aptitude. FAS should also be in contact with local employers and might be able to help you get foot in the door.

hello all just to say for my way becoming a panel beater and sprayer you have to get in a car and drive around to all the garages.my self personaliy i would go to the smaller garages. been to bigger garages and you would not find alot of experience in a big garage but a small garage your one to one the whole time and your learning ever min of the day, but you would have to have alot of interest to do this but this is when you become good at your work and you get a better pay rise.trust me go for smaller garages.down by new market co. cork there is a good garage one of my buddys is workin there that i know from fas.fas is a place to start but it is better for your self to go up front and show them your wanting to work never mind about papers for small garages you will still learn every day with the smaller garages.and i tell you till when you go to fas and your in a small garage you will know an awfull lot more than people in your class that are in bigger garages.its a fact benn there done that .hope this heps you all apprentices out there.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land! No apprenticeship would pay that amount of money!

Why do you need to earn that much? Are you in massive debt? Do you have a flash car that's expensive to run? Your own flat?

If so - downgrade the car, and move in with a friend to save money.
