Tought this might interest a few ladies here.

    http://www.irelandgirlgeekdinners.com
    What’s this all about???

Girl Geek Dinners are a chance for ladies in technology to get together, enjoy some nice food and drinks, and have fun meeting other women in their field. In Ireland, we plan to rotate the dinners around the country to give more women a chance to attend and see what it’s all about.

The dinners were started in London a few years ago and have now spread throughout the UK and Europe. You can find more about the international Girl Geek Dinners at http://girlgeekdinners.com. There is a short podcast here about the beginnings of Girl Geek Dinners that gives a good overview of the events.

Events may include speakers and speaking opportunities for those interested. We are actively seeking sponsors for the events as well. If you are interested in getting the chance to speak or interested in being a sponsor for Ireland Girl Geek Dinners, please contact us.

    lol
    So true....

Probably know at least one geek-wannabe (i.e. she's actually a twit but is stuck living in her glory days:rolleyes:) who'd go if she finds out about it.

Engineers don't count as geeks, and we are mindless drones we don't need to network.

All is fair in love and industrial espionage.

OK, this thread has gone disturbingly off-topic. Last 3 posts, including my own, deleted for the good of mankind. Or womankind. Or personkind.

This doesn't sound so much like a geek thing as a nerd thing. I like comic books and BSG. Do I fit in here? Maybe not since I'm technologically retarded...

Though I DID just buy a new camera. It's touchscreen! And pink!

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,351 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

You were doing so well until you mentioned it was pink. ;)

I work in technology but i have little knowledge of geeky stuff and zero interest. Me thinks this is not for me but i'd be interested to hear feedback if anyone does go

Likelihood of a man who describes himself wilfully as a geek knowing a woman he is not blood related to who would accompany him to a dinner? Low...

Do you have to wear geek clothes to go?

I think the point is a guy can go if he is accompanying a geeky girl, not geeky guys can go if they can find a girl....

no, but generally you would have to be able to hold a fairly intelligent conversation.

I've been to something like this and really enjoyed it.

Working in IT and being female it makes it harder to go along to other 'geek' events as they are dominated hugely by males. I went along to an all male one recently and felt so out of place. Sticking out like a sore thumb isn't my cup of tea. The minute the talk was over I was outa there.

    A.

Sounds interesting... what do you have to do to qualify as a 'geek girl'? :)

Edit: b3t4, your post reminded me of being in 1st year of college and trying to join the web society. I enlisted two of my female friends and the three of us went along, to be told 'umm... we've never actually HAD women show up here before.' Needless to say we were treated like intruders into their little boy club for the whole meeting and never went back. No wonder they never get any female members when they act like that!

It's obviously a trap set up by loveless male geeks to smoke out hot tech chicks in Dublin and Cork.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 4,754 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tree

It's geared towards tech heads as opposed to girls in sciences or similarly nerdy fields?

It appears to be geared towards girls who work in the IT /Tech sector.

    I could qualify, technically.

Heh, "technically". Crack myself up, I do.

That sounds really, really interesting and a decent networking opportunity (always useful for a final year Comp Sci student!) - but I am flat broke at the moment! :(

These lads are just idiots. I've known some girls who'd know WAY more about computers and software than me, did it bother me? Not in the slightest, if nothing else it meant I could talk about nerdy things and not have them roll their eyes, get bored and ask me to go away. Those lads probably just had inadequacy issues IMO.;)
