Im wondering does anyone bother going for a medical checkup to get the 'all clear' before they decide to start training for a marathon? Ive heard that you should if you are over 40 (im not) and have been a long time away from exercise.

I didn't specifically go before starting marathon training but I tend to have a lot of health problems so I would see my doc at least once a month in any case. Thank goodness for the Med1 form at the end of every year!

It is no harm to go see your doctor every once in a while just to check everything is in working order in any case. My health insurance covers me for an annual health screen which covers all the basics.

I did for the first marathon I ran (aged 29). Was probably unneccessary though. Have also done so since then in order to race in France, as a medical cert is compulsory for all races there.

They appear to have loosened the rules in France Peckham. For Ironman Nice this year, it was sufficient to be a member of the national body (triathlon Ireland for triathlon).

was reading an article over the weekend that stated of all triathletes (every level) that go for testing just over 1 percent are have an irregular cardiac condition but testing the group again after exercise that number rose to 5.2 percent.

So it was just trying to point out that it's important that your medical takes place where you can be test pre and post exercise
