Commercial Diving Courses

    Hi,

I have been enjoying recreational diving for a few years now and have become interested in a career in commercial diving. I know that it is a totally different ball game but it doesn't hurt to search through courses. I have been searching the net for a while now and can't get a straight answer on what is the best diving school to attend in the UK. I see that the Underwater Centre in Fort William gets a lot of good reviews, but can anyone who has experience of commercial diving or knows someone who does give me some advice please. Thanks

You may find more info on the following sites:

You must decide for yourself where to go, but from what I saw in Scotland people begin these courses without ever
having dived, and get on quite well.

It does help though if you have some affinity to the sea beforehand.

Within ten years there will be a shortage of commercial divers for the offshore industry as most active divers will have retired by then, and there have been less coming through the system.

    Plenty reading there!

A mate of mine did his class 4, 3 and 1 through Ft William and got a great course. He's now working off Saudi and has done work in the US too.
I did a commercial "try-a-dive" in Ft William and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Don't know why I have not looked at this forum before, used to be a fanitical sports diver, now just occasional, kids etc. and just getting someone to dive with, so Hi Folks.

Not a diver but did a few trips on a number of the older DSV's 2 years ago.
While having a beer one of the divers mentioned that of their 12 divers in sat, 6 were mid 50's, 3 in 40's, 2 in 30's and the baby was in late 20's. as he said, within 5 years half would have retired. This is pretty much the status of the whole industry so shortage is much closer than 10 years.

It is a totally different game and will probably finish you wiht sports diving. On a job at the moment, our ROV spervisor , with me here was a keen sports diver did 7 years commercial says on time off after a month or more in the water, the last thing you will want is to back in.

Oppertunities will be there so best of luck, been told South Africa can be worth looking at for certification, good price's and a holiday at the same time.

Alternatively, you could save the money, join the Navy and go for the navy divers course. They are training and qualifying in house and getting commercial tickets in SCUBA and hat diving, only people in Ireland running these courses I think!!
