have bought a 46" sony bravia full 1080P LCD TV, Just wondering, if i use games that transmit on 1080P (GTA4) will the game automatically switch to transmit that onto the tele? or is there a setting in games to make sure that they transmit in 720, 960, 1080P. I have it running fine and it looks amazing and when i switch on ps3 which is hooked up with hdmi lead it says on the av1 channel on tv, 1080P in the corner. so i think it automatically transmits. anyone any ideas?
    thanks

You can set the video output in the PS3. Your TV will simply display whatever signal is sent into it from the PS3.

    But GTA4 isn't even 720p let alone 1080p.

True enough. Very few games are 720p let alone 1080p.

On the PS3, in the display settings, if you uncheck everything except 1080p, then the PS3 will upscale to that resolution. It seems to work with most games.

Depends on the TV. That's definitely not the case with the new Bravia's or my delicious Series 6 Samsung...

Also, the HDMI cable has to a high enough version to display in 1080p.

Not this **** again. Thats total bull****. All HDMI cables will do 1080p with no issues at all.

It's not. Unable to give a full list but GT5 Prologue, Super Stardust HD, Flow and Ridge Racer 7 are certainly 1080p as will Wipeout HD when it is released.

Not true for me. Take Grid Race driver. Uncheck all settings bar 1080p (and 480p which you cannot disable) and launch Grid. The game will default to 480p not 1080p. The text displayed in top left of screen says 480p and game looks no better then 640x480 res. Now repeat but this time enable 720p. And launch Grid again. Game now runs at 720p.

This suggests that not ALL games on PS3 get upscaled. In fact vast majority of games run at 720p and your TV's scalar just stretches them to fill the screen. Those games that run at 1080p either do so natively (Virtua Tennis, RR7), or upscale from 720p to 1080p. But they are far and few between.

Buy an RGB scart cable, not a huge difference but it is noticable.

Well you could try an RGB scart cable or if your CRT has it (some did) a component cable. The picture will certainly be better than the composite cable that came with the PS3 but it'll still be miles and smiles away from looking anything as tastey has high-def.

rgb is that not what came with the ps3 in the first place if not could you point me in the way of one because corry season has started what ever that is.

Yep what comes with the PS3 is a composite cable and this is the lowest quality cable that you can get for the PS3. You can get an RGB scart cable in the likes of Gamestop or Game. They are between €10-15.

Alternatively have a look on ebay:

The same RGB SCART cable that works with PS2 works on the PS3 also.

I find this really annoying. Especially for games like GTA 4, COD4 and Assassins Creed. They will only be 1080p if you only have the 1080p box selected. Otherwise they will be in 720p even with all the boxes ticked!

The other side of the coin is that games such as guitar hero and tiger woods 08 will go down to 576p if 1080p is only selected. Really annoying when u load the game and it comes up 576p..never bothered to exit and reload.

But the source material is still 720p mate. None of those games you listed are natively 1080p. In fact GTA4 is not even 720p. Neither is COD4 despite what the box might say. In my opinion whether you select just 1080P on the PS3 or leave it on auto does not affect image quality much. If you only have 1080p selected then your PS3 on certain games is scaling the image internally to 1080p and passing this to your tv. The tv is now being fed a 1080P signal and the word "1080P" usually pops up on the corner of the screen. In reality though the source is still 720p image quality or less. Incidentally the 360 does this on all it's games by default if you have 1080P selected so has a more useful scalar, unlike the PS3 where the game has to specifically support 1080P upscaling and you have to select only 1080P which is annoying as your said. And as you found out, some PS3 games do not support 1080P upscaling at all (e.g. Grid, Guitar Hero, Tiger Woods etc..)

But....if you decide to leave your PS3 settings on auto as a lot of people do, then the image is passed directly to the tv as 720p usually and the TV is now being fed a 720p signal as shown on the corner of the screen. But now the TV will upscale the 720P image automatically to 1080P instead of the PS3. The bottom line is the source is still 720p on these games and the end result whether your PS3 or TV does the scaling is probably going to be similar quality wise depending on how good your TV is. No more detail is being added to the game in either case. The only exception is games that are native 1080P to begin with - Ridge Racer 7, Virtua Tennis and a few others spring to mind.
